I wasn't born long before that date, but I think you could buy houses for less than that. You would have been considered rich. Granny |

Marie - your £500 in 1956 would have been worth £8,133.34 in 2004. Found this on a site that does conversions |

My father-in-law was earning £750 per year then doing plating in a metal working factory. This was considered average money for semi-skilled labour. He did quite a lot of overtime. Hope that helps...... Merry |

To think I couldnt live off anywhere near that in a month £750. The reason I wanted to know was because I have a copy of a will my GGGAunt left and a lot of the people on it each recieved the sum of £500 and some got £100 adding it all up it came to about £5000 pounds plus all her estate on Hampstead Heath, so I suppose we can safely say she was quite well off. There again she was an actress and worked for nearly all of her 89 years. Thanks again Marie. |

In 1954 I was earning about £1 50 a week. An electricians basic wage was something like £7 or £8 a week, whereas a dock worker was reputed to be on something like £20 a week. Bob |

Useful rule of thumb is to multply by 20 for 1950 and by 10 for 1970. However you also need to bear in mind that people today are better off, so relalatively speaking they earn more, probably 1.5 = 2 times more than 50 years ago. |
