Hi, My son has recently become self-employed as a Plumber and I am trying to do his self-assessment. I have just about got the gist of it but need simple answers to a few questions about offsetting his losses in the first year. Does anyone have experience of this? Thanks, Dea x |

Thanks Lindy, but I have contacted them twice - the 1st person knew slightly less than I do and was reading an answer from the form which she did no understand. - the second person was too technical and didn't exactly answer the simple question I was asking. Dea x |

If you go to your local inland revenue office, they should give you all the help you need, I found the people on the help line useless. M. |

Dea, I really would advise visiting your nearest IR (sorry, Revenue & Customs!) office. We HATE having phonelines in the Revenue rather than face-to-face contact, despite the apparent belief that we prefer dealing with people on the phone. Take all the forms in, plus the accounts or whatever you have, and they should answer your questions. Good luck! x |

Hi Dea I called into our local Inland Revenue office and the staff were brilliant. They saw me immediately and went through everything without rushing. Because I like meddling on the pc, I'm going to do my self-assessment online, although the adviser did say this was easier than doing the paper version! I assume your son knows that he has to register as self-employed within three months of setting up his business? Otherwise he could be liable for a £100 fine (not sure if they actually would do that, but better to be safe!). If you look at the IR website, there's a number to ring to make an appointment at your local office (although mine is so small that they don't do appointments!). Mandy :) |
