I guess you have checked all the papers and the little adverts in shop windows. There are several casual jobs in our shop window for people doing gardening, shed erecting, even marquee erecting?

Hi If you have a car and a ladder why don't you do window cleaning. My lot charge me £7.50 for the front of the house, and they are not here longer than about 10 minutes. Put some fliers through people's doors. Know someone who travels into the more rural areas and he has got a great little business going which is mostly cash in hand. Gardening is another one which is cash in hand. Just cutting the grass and tidying up flower beds makes good money. You could look around at any new house developments and offer to do the communal gardening for them or nursing homes etc. Although maybe a bit too early in the year for that one. Best of luck

Thing is, how long do you expect to do casual work. Obviously there are implications if the dole people catch on to you working (not to mention the tax man). My son was made redundant in July, I scanned the online job vacancies - I think its called WorkTrain for local jobs and there was one ideal, same type of work and literally only a 50 yards from his old workshop (he doesnt drive, only bikes). He rang them straight away, walked round there and they gave him the job to start the next day. I hope you will be as fortunate - try the internet sites for job shops - there may be things there you hadnt thought of applying for.

Why don't you receive dole money? You were made redundant, you didn't resign, so therefore you are entitled to benefits. Patricia

Trevor, I'd echo what Heather and Gwynne have just said: cash in hand is too risky, for more than the obvious reason! All I can say is good luck - and hope to hear some good news from you soon. :-) Just had a thought - have you any temping agencies near you? (Though you've probably tried them already).

Hi Sorry, thought Trevor said he wasn't receiving any dole money at the moment. Therefore if he gets a job cash in hand he's not doing anything illegal that I'm aware of. If he regards himself as self employed he can earn a few thousand before he has to declare it anyway. Just keep all his receipts for everything and get someone to do the book-keeping for him for such times as the Tax Man is knocking on the door. Obviously I wouldn't advocate claiming benefits and doing a job on the side. Now that is leaving yourself wide open for prosecution. xxxxxxxx

In my neck of the woods, the term 'cash in hand' is used when there's no receipts, wage slips etc. - which is why I'm a bit wary! :-)

remember cash in hand jobs may not be covered by insurance etc. I echo what people say regarding benefits and undeclared working. Its a silly thing to do. If you are on benefits, I think you can earn so much as well as claiming your benefit, My dad has a part time job (few hours a week) down the spurs, and he religiously declares that every time he signs on (Hes almost 64) he can earn so much up to a limit, any more then his benefit is cut. Elaine x ps Tesco and the like always need shelf stackers etc.
