Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 12 Jan 2006 21:24

Just had a mail from my sister. She went to see my uncle today (in his 80's - only surviving member of his generation). She told him how we have contacted a 3rd cousin thru GR and this has led to us finally (after many years speculation which she has discussed WITH HIM several times) confirming that our Jennings ggg grandfather was born in Bristol ....... 'oh yes' he pipes up 'I knew that ...... my dad told me years ago that we had roots in the West Country' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! aaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!!! Maz. XX ps I dread to think what else he knows but hasn't told us

Maz rule 1 in geneology...pin elderly relatives to their chairs...do not let them go untill they reveal every aspect that could be useful to you later. Take prolific notes....even if you aren't sure what they mean....could be helpful later. Rule 2 remember to revive said elderly rellys with tea afterwards>

Thing is that if we hadn't made contact with the lovely Kathlyn, we would never have been able to confirm this - yet he knew all the time !!!! Lemon - he is chairbound anyway so we had already done all that - including the reviving! Oh and he forgot to tell us until last year about his father's trip to New Zealand - allegedly as a stowaway - this is why I wonder if there are any other things we should know! Maz. XX

GGGRRRR and husbands are just as bad too! Mine takes a teeny bit of interest in my family history stuff and watched the last series of Who Do You .... Last night he was so caught up in the Jeremy Paxman programme that he thought he might like me to start on his family tree. Start getting some bits of info from him but grind to a halt with his grandad. Conversation went something like this: What was your grandad's name? Don't know, he died when I was 4. Yes but you must have heard someone call him by his first name? No, I don't have any idea at all. Please can you try and think REALLY hard? No sorry, I haven't got a clue. I look back through 1837 and discover that grandad was called Ernest. Hey hubby! Guess what your grandad was called ... Ernest! Oh yes, that's right, I remember now. AAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHH

There was I thinking Great-Grandad came from Chesterfield. WRONG!!! Uncle had done some research and I quizzed him but he neglected to tell me that Great-Grandad actually came from Elston, Nottinghamshire. No wonder I couldn't find the right fella (to my knowledge) on any of the ruddy censuses. Ooooooooooooooooooh!!!!
