Do people still tip tradesmen at Christmas? My Dad used to tip the milkman, dustman and paperboy, and he used to get quite a few tips when he was a postman. Will you be giving tips this year?

Dee my Dad was a postie for 33 years, it was exciting when he came home to see what he had, as he got all sorts not just money. I tip the postie if I catch him. When we had a free paper tipped the boy who delivered that.

Hi Dee, I only tip the paper boy. I used to tip the postman but we never get the same one for more than a week at a time. We get our milk at the shop and our dustmen are useless (long story). Gwynne

I don't tip the dustmen as we have wheelie bins now so I feel I do part of their job now. I tip the postman (as long as it's the regular one)

It's interesting to hear what other people do. You are lucky with your dustmen, Malc Our postman has just left, he was really good, but expect I will tip the new guy. I don't have a paper delivered, but do tip the window cleaner. Dee xx

A few weeks ago we took my son's new inlaws out for a meal, post-wedding like. When I paid the bill I added a tip on the credit card machine. I didn't realise you had to put a couple of zeros in after the amount in pounds. The waiter was very upset that he got an 8p tip ! Lol.

I worked as a Waitress for nearly ten years and absolutely relied on my Tips to bring me up to a living wage. I did not expect people to tip me but I gave them the very best service that I could - in the hope that they would! However, Tips given on Credit Cards never actually got to the Waiting Staff as the Owner of the Restaurant 'had to declare them to the Inland Revenue' (eh? as his income, or as ours? We never saw these tips)). So, if you have had good service and want to Tip the Staff, ask what happens to the Tips given on Credit Cards. You may find that you are just giving the Owner some extra profit. Or they may just go into a communal pot and be shared out equally between the Waiter who gave you such excellent service, and the nose-picking Barman! Olde Crone

I must admit that I wish all tipping was done away with. It seems grossly unfair when going to a restaraunt to tip the waiter, when the kitchen staff are also doing a good job. I tip hairdressers who work in a salon, but not if they are the business owner. I used to tip postperson until they kept changing, don't see the dustmen, and don't get milk delivered, the window cleaner gets a tip though. Val

Valice Where I worked, Kitchen Staff got £2 an hour MORE than Waiting Staff. We had one Chef who was brilliant and I used to give him a share of my Tips. The other Chef was bone idle, a useless cook and I frequently had to field complaints about the food he dished up. I never shared with him. But I agree, tipping in Restaurants shouldn't be necessary, or indeed anywhere else - people should get a decent living wage for the work that they do. Olde Crone
