Bubble and squeak is left over cabbage and potato fried, with fried bacon. The cabbage and potato is 'Bubble' (also known as cabbage and potato hash) the bacon is the 'Squeak' David

Proper bubble & squeak is leftover cabbage and spuds, but I think its nowadays used to describe any leftover veg & mashed up spuds that are fried. I love Boxing day bubble and squeak with leftover (if there are any - ha ha) roast spuds, brussels sprouts and parsnips! nell

I used to run a transport cafe, and I can assure you that it was not left overs. It is mash potatoe and sprouts with mixed herbs. Usually with a fried egg on top. Sometimes with chopped bacon mixed in.

Spotted Dick is probably now made with a sponge mixture but the proper(i.e Old Fashione)!!! way was with Suet fat.( Not the packet sort) Lots of sultanas.. rolled in a floured cloth. tied up and popped into a pan of boiling water. SimilarTreacle (Golden Syrup) in a Bowl , Sussex Pond Pudding Oh I'm now wishing for a cold winter for a excuse to make them!! Jay

Thanks everyone, That clears that up ! I can't imagine why my grandaughter has to know about that for school. I wasn't able to question her as she was heading out to a church camp for the week-end, but I'm sure she will be happy that I got an answere for her. I didn't do any cooking myself before I left England, as my mom was a fantastic cook and we only had a small kitchen. She was always running us out. There were seven of us and I was the youngest.Mom also had a bakery for awhile when I was young. It was right next to the Manchester University, and a lot of students and staff used to eat lunch there.Piping hot meat and patatoe pie with gravy, steak and kidney pie etc, and the best home made bread and scones in the world......My mouth is watering again !! Joy, I would love to have the recipe for Spotted Dick. Thanks, Margaret x
