Confusion over the hazards of hairdrier radiation MEMBERS of the public were yesterday left in confusion over the question of radiation health hazards from hairdriers. A leading Government scientist said there were unanswered questions about the health effects of electromagnetic fields around ordinary household appliances. As a precaution, people should be given advice on how to limit their exposure to electrical equipment, said Dr Jill Meara, from the Health Protection Agency (HPA). She said: 'I would say there's sufficient uncertainty that it's worth telling members of the public practical things they can do to reduce exposure in case they feel they are suffering from these fields... things like staying further away from appliances and not buying cheap tinny hairdriers.' Yet a HPA report found no evidence of a proven scientific link between electromagnetic fields and symptoms such as rashes, headaches and fatigue. It found that, for some people, the symptoms were real and could have a big impact on their lives in a similar way to chronic fatigue syndrome. Sufferers genuinely believed their condition was caused by exposure to electrical appliances, despite there being no scientific evidence linking the two. The report urged more research into the phenomenon and helpful ways of treating sufferers. A Department of Health spokeswoman said: 'There is no high quality scientific evidence to date to suggest that the health of the general public is being affected by electromagnetic fields (EMF) associated with electrical appliances or equipment. 'What we are not doing is disputing the fact some individuals are experiencing very real symptoms. However, what we cannot say is that these are a result of exposure to EMF.' Nick Clough, managing director of the firm Sensory Perspective, which makes EMF detection devices, said: 'It is a syndrome that demands recognition and this report from the HPA, whose remit is to provide an integrated approach to protecting UK public health, is a clear indication it is an issue that requires urgent attention.' So now you know! |
