I remember it clearly. My sister and I had both been in hospital having our tonsils out and we came home on a Sunday afternoon to find a television set - consol model - sitting in the front room. It was wonderful. The year ? ...1951

My dad wouldn't let us have a telly when I was very little as he said it would 'ruin family life and end conversation' (ha! he spent most of the time he was at home in his garage/workshop making things so we never saw him anyway!). Then a neighbour who was upgrading took pity on us and gave us the old one he was getting rid of. My dad couldn't refuse - his natural meanness was stronger than his dislike of tv and he couldn't bring himself to turn down anything that was free! So we got one when I was about 7 or 8. It was ancient even for the time - it had a small black and white screen in a huge box. We were only allowed to watch bbc and bbc2 as ITV was 'corrupt', and never during the day (we had to sneak to a neighbours to watch playaway on saturdays). My dad would ban tv for the slightest thing - playing in our room too loudly etc - as he was looking for the smallest excuse to keep us away from it. Now he has about 5 tvs in his house and his hobby is repairing them/getting them going. How times change. But he still doesn't think there is anything watching except on bbc1 and 2. Angela

We were like Val. My parents got our first T.V. for the Coronation in 1953. It was a little 9 or 10 inch screen but we had some sort of magnifying screen that stood in front of the T.V. to make it look bigger. I was 'only little' at the time!!!!! Kath. x
