i was just wondering if anyone else takes Fluoxetine and what side effects they get? I have been dieting for ages now but just feel like im putting weight on all the time. When i was taking it last year i ballooned but i wasnt sure if that was comfort eating. Now ive been on it again for about 4 months and was just wondering if anyone else has put weight on since taking it? xxx

I hate to say this Steph, but fluoxetine should actually supress hunger!! It is part of the prozac family, an Anti depressant, but is also used for such things as OCD and Bullimia.... the dose you are on determines what you are taking it for.. As an Anti D... usually one tablet a day, OCD 2 or 3 and the same for eating disorders. :))

Em, i spoke to my doctor about the weight when i was taking it last year, he told me to double the dosage which is as you say treats people with Bulimia but i just seemed to swell and turned very waxy looking! I also take Metmorfin (spelling) which is to lower my sugar levels and help my PCOS, they are supposed to cause weight loss too but they all just seem to have the opposite effect..?? xxx

go back to your doc then steph.... wondering (trying to remember back to when i prescribed these to patients) if the two are incompatable... Just remembered, if i am right, the Fluoxetine only really helps with weight loss at the beginning, i am sure as the body reajusts it ceases that function...

i think the same applies to metmorfin Over time, Met's side effects decrease, and then they only reappear sporadically, if at all, and not as badly as they do during the first month or two after you begin taking it....

Metmorfin does tend to cause excess gas and d the runs.... so maybe that is the problem.. making you feel bloated. i do know with PCOS you should have been given advice about diet?

I guess you need to go back to the doctor.

Another side effect with fluoxetine is increased brain activity thus causing insomnia Ken xx

Em, i was never given any advice about it really. Doc told prescribed me Diannette (spelling) Pill...for contraception but mostly to help with my skin, cos i got bad side effects of spots... Then went back to the docs b4 going back on Fluoxetine cos i was feeling low...he told me to use Metmorfin...then went back again and he advised me to start on the fluoxetine again...havent been back since, due to work really and not having the holiday days left to take! xx

yes ken you are right.... but that shouldnt make a diference to stephs eating habits :)) Steph you really need to go back to him, remember PCOS is a serious condition in itself, and plus you are taking Fluoxetine you should have regular contact with your doctor. Its a sign of a bad GP who just repeat prescribes Anti D's without regular check ups!

Ken, ive never had that much trouble sleping until the bombing....now i get nightmares, but they only keep me up once in a while, so thankfully i dont suffer with that xx

thanks alot everyone. Truthfully i dont like my GP...and yes we have found that if we say something doesnt seem to be working he will just double the dosage or so...he doesnt like looking into things. My mum usually comes with me (i know it sounds like im a baby) But its only down to her that i managed to get myself checked out for pcos. My doc just thought i was hormonal and attention seeking! It wasnt until she put her foot down that he sent me off for scans ect so we found out! But again, thank you for all your advice. I will re-book with my doc....and even speak with him about maybe coming off the fluoxetine. xxx
