BENNETT English: From the medieval given name Benedict (Benedictus (Blessed). This owed its popularity in the Middle ages cheifly to St. Benedict (c.480-550), who founded the Benedictine order of monks at Monte Cassino and wrote a monastic rule that formed a model for all subsequent rules. Benedictus is found in England alongside versions derrived from the Old French form Benit, Benoit, which were common amongst the Normans.

Hi Jean I got this info from Maz in Cornwall ages ago from one of her threads. BENNETT: From the medieval given name ‘Benedict’ originating from the latin ‘Benedictus’ meaning ‘Blessed’. Origins: English, Scottish and Dutch The name comes from a part of North Lancashire where a Benedictine Monastery known as Furness Abbey was founded by the Savigny monks of Normandy in 1127. The ‘Bennetts’ held a family seat there from these ancient times. Hope this helps. If you do find the coat of arms I would be gratefu; if you could let me know. Cheers Kaz
