Oi Pikey!: A Celebration of Cheap Living by Carrie-Anne Brackstone and Laura Bushell is published on Monday. There was a phone in on the radio this morning for people to tell their stories of friends/rellies who are over-the-top tight-fisted. One was someone whose hub cap came off .... instead of buying a new one, he sprayed the middle of his wheel silver!!! Anyone got any funny stories of the misers they know??!! Maz. XX

When my grandfather died, he left unused sheets and shirts still in their original wrappings but he would middle sheets and reverse the collars on his shirts to get the full wear. Beth :)

Hi Pat - I know, I was quite surprised to hear them talking about it on the radio! Do you mean complaints on here or complaints about the book? I will pop off and get the Amazon review and paste it below, so that people can see what it is actually about. Maz. XX

Synopsis If you've got a loyalty card and love a 3 for 2 offer, shop on eBay or take soaps from hotels this is the book for you! Pikeys have been with us for thousands of years but in recent times the pikey instinct has become ubiquitous. With a wealth of money-saving offers and the glorious advent of cut-price airlines, its is now practically impossible to pay full price for anything - should you be foolish enough to want to. Pikeyness is a way of life with a rich history and culture. From Jesus to LoveJoy, the Queen to the Wombles, Oi, Pikey! traces the origins and growth of the movement and salutes its pioneers and celebrity champions, enabling the reader to identify the pikey next door and embrace the pikey within.

We have travellers at school and it's a no go word, but saying that they call other races names... It's not a politically Correct word now..... So some of the do gooders might be complaining. Pat

My BIL came round one day just before he was moving house. Brought his wooden clothes prop asked my hubby can you saw this in half down the middle so I can leave one and take one with me when I move. Germaine x

Maz, When my sister moved house not long ago the previous owners took everything and I mean everything. They even took out the light bulbs from the ceiling fixtures. Not only is that mean it is downright spiteful. Jean x.

Sue Report 5 Oct 2005 11:27

Jean When we moved into our present house in 1978, the previous owners took everything! Even the curtain rails, light fittings and fitted wardrobes. We had to replace all the skirting boards in the bedrooms! AND we had to wait 6 months for their new house purchase to go through before we could move in!!! Maz My DIL calls them 'do as you likeys', but I think that refers to travellers rather than scrooges! Sue xx

Sue, That is dreadful. How on earth can you take out fitted wardrobes? Comfort yourself with the fact that what goes around comes around. Jean x.
