do you tend not to care what people think of you so much. I remember never saying a word in case I upset anyone when I was younger - now I don't care and let people know what I think if they ask me. I never go looking for an argument though, I can't be bothered with all that - takes up too much energy. |

Hi Joy, enjoy your shower - and you can move in whenever you want as it seems they've gone away for the week, I'll help get their furniture out for you. Now going to work and looking forward to terrorising the bolshy customers. Not many of them thank goodness. |

I agree, Trish. As I've got older I feel as if I know myself better and this has given me the confidence to say what I really think rather than what people want to hear. Sometimes (especially at work) this has made me unpopular - years ago this would have really bothered me but now I just don't care ! But I always try to avoid deliberately offending or upsetting anyone. |

Absolutely agree. I tell my grand-children not to say 'ByeBye big nose' which of course encourages them to do just that. They are amazed that anyone doesn,t mind being name called, a big upsetting thing in their world. As you get older you can contradict other people and get away with it on the grounds of wisdom (or age) Happy days |

This is the subject of recent news reports, isn't it? Some psychologist has decided that it's all to do with how the frontal lobes of the brain age. Apparently, as you get older, you lose your inhibitions! Crikey! I've never been shy of saying what I thought - does that mean I've always been old or my brain started deteriorating sooner than it was supposed to? Don't have to worry about 'getting' old though - I'm already there - so LOOK OUT! LOL CB >|< |

Ive always been very straight with people even when I was at school which did have its problems as teachers didnt like it. I always say you either like me or hate me and if you hate me then thats your problem. At work, Im very straight tell people what I think and i get on with eveyone including the boss. And I have loads of friends. Yvonne |

I think I have always been concerned about what people I care about think of me. But life's too short to bother about anyone else's opinion. If someone asks me what I think, I usually tell them, if I believe they are asking me what I think. But quite often when people ask what I think, they really want you to agree with them. As you get older its easier to know what people are really saying. nell |

Hi Trish. Looks like I am out numbered. I have always been a worrier of what other people think of me, most probably since the age of about 9 or 10yrs. I must admit that I do not worry so much about what other people think now I have turned fifty. Probably a lot more outspoken than I used to be. But usually when I have had a couple of drinks that seem to give me 'Dutch Courage' I have always put it down to my family circumstances when I was at an age to realise that we were not very well off. I do realise I had a very insecure childhood. Perhaps I should start a new thread on this subject. What do you all think? Jenny x |

I used to worry about what folk thought of me when i was much younger!! In fact i have a school report in which the nicknamed me 'little Miss Sorry', because i was always saying sorry!! Eg if someone bumped into me i would apologise to them???? Somewhere along the line i have stopped worrying about what i said to people, because if they choose to be disrespectful to me then i see no reason to show them respect!! maybe this is what is wrong with society today!! Respectfullness was instilled in me from the day i was born, but it would seem others werent brought up the same way!! Sad that life has taken this turn!! Karen |

Jenny, My family were also far from well off financially, but my parents instilled into me that, no matter what titles or background people had, underneath they were all just people like us and no better. They had both mixed with many wealthy and titled people in the course of their jobs, so they were in a good position to judge. I was taught to respect my elders and authority figures, but having been an extremely shy young child who would barely speak to anyone, once I went to school, I was encouraged to speak out and put my point of view. I've stuck to that ever since, so whenever anyone asks my opinion, I give it. I have to say that the behaviour of some of the elders and authority figures I've encountered has left quite a lot to be desired! It's true, as Nell said, people often only ask for your opinion when they want you to agree with them, but of course it's possible to disagree with someone without being unpleasant about it. Believe it or not, even I try to be tactful when it's appropriate! As to what other people think of me - beauty is in the eye of the beholder - and, in my opinion, so is everything else. I've found with some people that if they don't like you, it doesn't matter what you do or say to them, it makes no difference. That's up to them. I usually find they're people I don't much care for anyway, so I don't let it bother me. One thing though, I find it increasingly irritating now when people who are many years my junior start telling me what to do and treating me like some brain-dead old biddy. I'm quite likely to become very outspoken with them! CB >|< |
