I bought a Heliotrope from a garden centre recently. It's in a pot, but I wanted to plant it in a flowerbed. It looks very healthy, although the flowers have now died off. The instructions that came with it say it should be treated as an annual, but my gardening 'bible' says it's really a half-hardy perennial, and as I'm not into 'lifting' things to over-winter, I'd like to leave it in the ground all year. There is a South-West-facing spot where it could go, and it's quite sheltered. Does anyone have any experience of growing heliotrope? If so, have you any tips for keeping it alive through the winter, please? CB >|<

Morning, Put four sticks around it and attach fleece to them around the sides and over the top, this will protect it from the worst of the cold and frost. xxhugxx

Thanks, Lindy. It's worth a go. It's got such a lovely scent, I'd hate to lose it to the cold. CB >|< X

She's right, you know. Perhaps double layer of fleece and peg it down well ? Len

OK Len, thanks. Now, where do I get some fleece? Has anyone got a spare sheep, please? CB >|<

Ah, yes, Jeanette! I saw the Welsh sheep when I was there in March. Up the mountains, they were. Must have been nailed there, I reckon. Steep sheep - legs on one side longer than those on the other. Helps them keep their balance, so they don't fall off. Well, so my Mum used to say, anyway. CB >|<

Jeanette, I've got some ancient rellies (relics?) in York, Whitby, Danby & Great Ayton, so who knows? Don't think they had much to do with sheep though. Those that weren't sailors seemed to be cobblers from what I can gather. Now why are you laughing? CB >|<

Enough of this hilarity. Jeanette. I must bid you Nos Da and get off to my bed. I need an early start tomorrow. A special guest from the magical land of GR is arriving on Tuesday, and I must prepare. I wonder where we put that red carpet ...
