It is so quiet here, I love it. I too used to be a night owl, but situations change don't they? The noise here comes during the day, when the lawn mowers come out. Even then, our livingroom is to the back so we are still peaceful. Deanna x |

Just for good measure, we've now got the gas main repairers outside again with their pneumatic drills and a motorbiker with engine problems riding up and down our little stretch of road, revving his engine. No wonder people play loud music - it's the only way I can drown out the noise of the rest of the world! But then I can't hear the doorbell or the phone. Can't win really. CB >|< |

You have my full sympathy, Jim. David and I stayed overnight at a plush hotel in the Warwickshire countryside last weekend, expecting the peaceful surroundings promised in the advertising we'd seen. We wanted an early start on Saturday morning, so we came back after dinner for an early night around 10.30. It was quite a warm evening, so we had to open the windows. That was when we began to hear the wedding guests we'd seen roaming about the grounds earlier on. At 11, the windows of the hall where the wedding party was taking place were closed, so we drifted off to sleep. Just after midnight, we were woken by the two old biddies returning to the room next to ours and slamming their room door, then their bathroom door several times, then their wardrobe door. All through this percussion performance, they were talking very loudly. Finally, it seemed they had gone to bed, but they kept talking. And talking. And talking until 1.30. I wasn't the slightest bit interested in what a wonderful time they'd had at the Mediaeval Banquet that the hotel provides on weekend evenings, I just wanted some sleep! They stopped and I breathed a sigh of relief. We got back to sleep. Shortly afterwards, we were woken by a man shouting in the corridor outside our room. Then there were other voices, laughter, doors slamming, then silence. Back to sleep. But not for long. These same people were back and forth several more times, making noise until 4.20, when I finally got up, threw open our room door and told them to shut up or I'd get them thrown out of the hotel. I got a drunken 'Sor-reeee' and the two young men concerned went away and kept quiet afterwards. Not much use to us when we were woken at 7 a m by low-flying jets screaming overhead on their way to/from the local airport. I ended up with an awful headache that lasted all day and ruined the plans we had to visit several nearby places. I was thankful it was quiet enough for a couple of hours mid-afternoon, so I could take a nap. Sadly, the same thing happened on Saturday night, when the hotel hosted two more weddings, although the guests quietened down at midnight, and there seemed to be nobody in the next room that night. We thought we'd be better off on Sunday night, having arranged to stay at a former coaching inn in the middle of nowhere. Desperately tired, we arrived there on Sunday evening to find it was situated at a crossroads of an extremely busy road, with heavy vehicles trundling past throughout the night. The tractors joined in as soon as the sky lightened. Oh boy! Were we glad to get home. It's not the quietest place in the world here at night, but it sure beats the 'peaceful' countryside we visited! Sympathies Jim. It's one thing getting up at that time by choice but I hate being woken, whatever time. We haven't set an alarm clock in years for the same reason. I'm up soon after 5 and in the summer it's a bonus part of the day that I have largely to myself. Not so keen on the ever darker mornings ahead though. Gwyn |

Neighbour's teething baby has been howling for an hour and now the Cockerel at the farm over the way has joined in! No more sleep for me tonight. |
