I learnt today that companies are allowed £150 from the taxman per employee to hold a christmas party. Other people on the course today were saying how their boss often gave out £15 each and thought they were being generous!

We don't have an official Christmas party anymore, and haven't for a few years. One year they even banned us from organising our own ! This year my group is going to one of those big events held where logts of companies go. Whether it will be in any way subsidised I don't know, I doubt it.

PMSL Bec...you reminded me of one Christmas, I made up a nice tray of Xmas food including cracker, for old man who lived on his own across the road. My son thought it was awful, cos who could he pull the cracker with? I laugh every time I think of it..

As the Christmas party is the only thing that those of us long-suffering 'other halves' get from the company as compensation for all the inconvenient business trips and late nights the employees have to work, I think £150 per head is just about OK. More would be better, depending on the venue booked for the occasion, as some of the London venues are extremely pricey. Having been responsible for booking Christmas parties and other functions during the course of my working life, I know it's not easy to book somewhere that suits everyone at a time that suits everyone, but some places do give discounts for early bookings, so booking in about May is better than leaving it till October, and Friday nights are obviously the ones that are booked first. Obviously, the smaller the company the less likely it is that large amounts will be in the kitty to begin with, but it shouldn't stop a good organiser arranging something appropriate.
