Why did Charlotte Bronte cause a storm by dedicating Jane Eyre to the novelist William Thackeray?

That's as clear as mud if you haven't read the book Rochester - character in book - has batty wife but falls in love with Jane Eyre and suggests they cohabit Thackeray - real person - has batty wife and people assumed ... Is that clearer? Beth :)

Well I don't think 'batty' is a politically correct term now :-) but yes, Thackeray's wife was in a lunatic asylum, so people assumed Rochester was based on him and that he and Miss Bronte were 'an item'. Oh! Shocking! nell
