Actually, GR's site does generate spyware cookies on your PC....unless you keep it at bay by a using anti-spyware program. Judy |

Judy - Happy 4th of July! If you know about Spyware, maybe you could post to tell everyone what it is and what it does? My husband has done the necessary disabling for me (Sounds odd, I know, but you know what I mean!), but others might want to know how to do it. :>) CB >|< |

I don't look at the Success page but am aware that my firewall or some other aspect of my security is forever blocking spyware attempts whilst I am on GR. Perhaps others are not aware of it because they elected not to be notified. len |

I have a lot of trouble with spyware on this site and quite often I can't post because my virus program is constantly blocking. Some of them have been quite serious including something trying to take control of Mozilla Firefox a few times, but ONLY when I am on this site. Don't know if it is a coincidence or not but it seems odd. Mandy |

I have Zonealrm, run Adaware every week, have blockers everywhere, but I still get 'Trackers'' on this email addy. I noticed it when I first subscribed to FR, then I came on here and got more. But in their defence, the only other sites with that adday, and I get am getting more c**p lately, is Ancestry, and 1837online which I have used more in recent weeks, so take your pick! Kim |

CB....a belated thank you for the 'Happy Fourth!' Had a great day BBQing with family and friends.....weather was perfect and I ate and drank WAY too much! LOL! As for what spyware/adware does: Spyware is any technology that aids in gathering information about a person or organization without their knowledge or explicit permission. Spyware silently transmits user information via the Internet to advertisers. In addition, Spyware can cause your PC to perform very poorly (slow browsing and downloads, program crashes etc). Spyware may be found: Bundled inside of shareware or freeware applications In free versions of otherwise licensed applications In peer-to-peer (P2P) and other file sharing programs Some applications that include Spyware, are: Xupiter, Gator, SaveNow, NewDotNet, BDE Projector, HotBar, Bonzai Buddy, Comet Cursor, Morpheus, WebHancer, WinMX, NewName, Toolbars downloaded from the internet, Incredimail, Kazaa and Wild Tangent (to name but a few.) To remove Spyware I personally use Microsoft's Anti-Spyware and Adaware, both free programs. Microsoft works in real time, preventing spyware from entering your PC in the first place, it scans to find and remove any pre-existing spyware/adware and it updates and scans automatically so you don't have to remember to do these two chores (updating and scanning.) I use Adaware as a back up which I do have to remember to update and scan. I like this program a lot but it only removes the generated junk that spyware/adware generates on your PC.....it does detect and advice you that there are .exe programs - which are the actual downloaded programs on your PC - but you must UNINSTALL these programs manually. No matter which program I use I always go back and check, manually, to be sure that any .exe program either one detects is removed and if it is still present I remove it myself. People tend to think that their anti-virus programs (ie Norton, McAfee, AVG, etc....) is safeguarding them against spyware/adware - anti-virus and anti-spyware programs are two completely different types of programs dealing with two completely different types of problems. Viruses and spyware though can and do cause the same type of PC problems. As for not being able to view the GR photo page, Brian, if you haven't already, may I suggest that you make sure that you have all the necessary things checked off in your Security settings.....See my thread: 1 Stop Routine PC Maintenance on Tips Board, 1st page, the post on 'Fixing Page Cannot be Found.' Make sure, too, that you have all the updates your PC needs at Microsoft's Update site.....not just the CRITICAL updates that on occassion will pop up on your screen advising you that you have updates that need to be installed.
