I received this e-mail from Estelle: , obviously we do not want to lose members as we value everyone's contribution to the site. However, we do have guidelines to follow and cannot be seen to be following these guidelines for some members and not for others. Your thread was reported to us and we acted on this report. You have not been singled out by anyone, I can assure you. However, we do investigate all reports of abuse or threads posted on the wrong boards. I am sorry you are upset by this, but we are just following our own guidelines. If you do see anything that you think should not be on the message baords then please report it to our abuse administrator. Regards Estelle nell

Bec Where have you been? I put a light-hearted thread on the Tips board called 'How to be the perfect ancestor' with stuff on it like making sure you are always born just before a census and always marry just after one etc and 'a member' complained that it was on the wrong board, so GR pulled it. I was annoyed as a)it seems that if someone complains, GR will remove the thread, but if no-one complains you can put up any thread you like b) if they had told me I could have saved the thread, which lots of people enjoyed, and posted it here instead It also turns out that another GR member was mailed by GR to tell her that she had complained about me, which she hadn't. It's very boring now. nell

Hello Helen, sorry I'm in Crete on work and this is the first I've heard of this. I hope you're ok... This all seems very trivial and silly... love becx

Hi Nell Does this mean that GR don't read the threads before deleting them and that someone can complain and the threads get zapped possibly for no reason whatsoever? Heather

Nell Did GR say that they agreed with the complainant that your thread should not have been on the Tips Board?

As I understand it, GR will remove a thread someone complains about if it is on the 'wrong board'. I think it is rather petty as a lot of people enjoyed it and only one person objected, but there you go. GR do not police the boards, so they only respond if someone complains. nell

Nell, but the real problem was that it appears to have been a spoof complaint anyway and we don't seem to have had a reply from GR to that. They are very goos at quoting rules and regs but don't sort out the actual problem. Ann Glos

What I was trying to get to the bottom of Nell was whether or not, when someone complains, GR actually decide for themselves whether or not a thread is on the right board or they just automatically boot it if someone complains. My recollection of your thread was that it was not only amusing but also contained what might be seen as 'Tips', especially for novices, on some of the obvious, and less obvious, pitfalls to look out for when conducting research. It seems to me that, at the very least, GR should have asked you to consider moving it to another board or justify why it was placed on Tips. Not just obliterate it out of hand.
