I was told that ships are 'she' because they cost so much to keep in powder (gunpowder I guess!) and paint. :-) |

Think it best to just have the few things that are m or f Look at Europe where just about everything is one or the other House, chair etc fem. - in France anyway. Also if we are the Mother Country and Germany is Fatherland - why cant the two get along a little better ? |

Yes Jill, I could never understand why a bra is a masculine item in France I once had my class in fits of laughter when I mentioned that I didn't know of any other feminine item which was classed as masculine. I think GB is the only country where things are not split up into masculine and feminie. At least the languages I know: French, Dutch, German and Spanish. Sylvia |

In this country the saying 'she'll be right' is often used, particularly when one has their fingers crossed that something will work !! JudyNZ |

Hi Sylvia, My Welsh Nain would say 'He thinks he's the cat's whiskers' she also used to say 'He thinks he's the bee's knees'. She had dozens of sayings but my favourite one was one she used if someone was talking about a person in glowing terms and she was fed up with all the flattery. If, for example, I was going on about my friend Ann my Nain would eventually say, 'Well, Ann's little arse in a bandbox'. (Apologies for anyone offended by the 'language' but it is a direct quote and in my family that word is not considered swearing.) I never really understood what she meant. But it did stop me whittering on. Gwynne |

Don't know if it's true or not but I was told men call things that they control 'she' ............. .............cars, boats, planes, large guns (Big Bertha), large machinery, women...................LOL But that all stems from when men dominated everything and now that that is gradually changing there might be more he's....... Maybe the french bra is masculine because it is controlling......... Mandy |
