Oooeer, Gone mad and yesterday bought a grow bag and two tomato plants. Never grown any before and haven't a clue what to do. Have cut bag in half and stuck a plant in each. Will now just wait and see...........................Checked again today, no tomatoes yet. Jenny

Plenty of water, Jenny, and a bit of patience, give em a few days and they will start to show some enthusiasm.......dont forget that when they DO grow you might need some 'Tyers'? (supports) to take the weight...get some tomato food and growmore fertilizer.......you will have ' marters' as big as saucers........they need to be in a sunny situation... Bob

Don't know if you know already Jenny but when you have got 5 trusses of flowers on your plants you need to nip the top off to stop them growing any more. You then have to keep nipping off the suckers that grow out between the leaf and the stem of the plant. Gives you a better crop. There's probably a diagram on the internet that explains it better!!! I haven't grown Cucumbers but dad did and I think he took all the males off when they started to flower. All too bitter to eat if you let them develop. Percy Throw up

Oh I thought of another thing about Tomatoes that I read in a Victorian book and tried years ago. At the end of the tomato season take some green tomatoes, put them in a brown paper bag and put them in a cool/dark drawer. They will be ripe for Christmas. And very nice they were too. Much nicer than the watery imports that are sold at that time of year. And makes you feel a bit 'Good Life' !!!!!! Mandy

Thanks all for the friendly advice. Seems a little more complicated than I thought it would be.....I thought they got on with it themselves (the tomatoes that is). So, tomatoes have trusses, not sure I am on the same wavelength here lol %3A-%29 and I have to count them!!! So plenty of water, feed them and nip out the trusses. I can do that, yes I can. Of course Tomatoes have trusses!!!!!!!!!!!! Have you ever seen one with a hernia!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL Mandy ok I'll be less technical, buches of flowers LOL

Thanks Mandy, I did know what a truss was (honest I did). I have found a gardening book now and have read the instructions. Very soon I shall have more tomatoes than I know what to do with, (she says rather confidently). The book I have found is an old Readers Digest one from about 1965, and as well as showing how to grow plants it gives recipes for wine making (using the fruit vegatables once you have grown them) as well as lots of recipes for different chutneys and jam making. Is shall be joining the WI next!!! %3B-%29 Sherlock, You mean to say you HAVEN'T read any of my novels........Love amongst the Lilacs, and Passion behind the Potting Shed to name but two!! lol -:) Jenny
