I personally have little to no faith in the local police! A couple of years ago my car was rolled out of my drive by three teens trying to steal it. My gs dog let me know and my hubby and i ran out. The dog got one, my hubby got another and one ran up the street. I called the police and while i was on the phone was ordered to call off my dog. As i did the lad ran up to my hubby and tried to stab him, my hubby didn't back down and the lads ran off. This was at three am. We sat up waiting for the police all night and they arrived at 9.00am! The Wpc gave me a crime number to give to my insurance company, i didn't want to claim because it would affect my no-claims. She asked for my insurance documents but i was tired and didn't know where i'd put them, so... she gave me a producer! YES, REALLY! (they didn't find the lads, not sure if they bothered looking!) I don't bother to call them now, anyone else the same? |

We lived three doors away from the local Police Station at one time. We came home one day to find we had been burgled, went to the PS to report it and it took them 2 days to get around to visiting us. What a waste of time that was! |

My son is in the RAF and four of them went into the local town near Lynham for a drink....Afterwards on the way back through the town they were waving to the local girls and pulled in by two police......... the RAF lads had a desigmated driver who did not drink for the night....one police officer was pain and despite a negative breath test or any other problem booked all four in the car for not wearing seat belt this was despite telling the driver and passenger to get out of the car and watching them remove their seat belts.............on this subject I totally believe my son as he has been driving since he was 17 and he would not consider not wearing a seat belt... I told him to defend the case but he replied that the other policeman didn't do anything to help on the night and both would lie in court........... |

This is my last reply on any thread defending the police. When I served it was a police SERVICE. I don,t like this lack of action any more than anyone else, but when I speak to the few remaining serving colleagues, who I would trust with my life, you get the shrugged shoulder reply. 'we can,t do it like we used to do'. Perhaps the analogy is that you don,t answer the phone if your house is burning down. Even in my day, you were filling forms in for the home office who want to know how many ford cortinas are stolen on a wednesday against ford escorts on a thursday. Make SOME allowance, please. Happy days |

I haven’t had many dealings with the Police fortunately but I must say that to me they have been wonderful. On one occasion I had a car accident which incidentally was my fault. To complicate matters I was driving my Dad’s car because he was in hospital and I was on my way home from visiting him. They were so wonderful and understanding and even waited with me until my son arrived to take care of matters as the car was a write off and needed towing away. It was off the road so it wasn’t necessary for them to wait but they did. On another occasion I had to call the police as I had found my father in law dead at home. Again they arrived quickly, were sympathetic and understanding and waited with me (for about 2 hours as they didn’t want to leave me on my own) until the doctor arrived to certify death. I know that these days they are bogged down with paperwork and in a lot of cases their hands are tied as far as what they can and can’t do. It must be a very frustrating job at times, if not all the time. Marion |

In defence of the police force/service - I firmly believe they have their hands tied so far behind their backs they are not allowed to do much about anything any more...that's the way the law has got so stupid these days (same for teachers, parents or anyone else trying to instill discipline). And the attitude of the police in the posts above is reflecting it. Imagine chasing after a burglar/vandal/whatever, putting your life at risk in catching said criminal only to be spat on/punched/kicked/stabbed/shot at in the process, then filling out hours upon endless hours of paperwork - only to find the criminal being let off because of some technical hitch or that he was too young blah blah blah.....off he goes, scott free & punching the air in triumph. Not only that, but perhaps when trying to catch the criminal the police officer twisted the criminal's wrist - next thing you know and it's the officer who gets charged with assault!!!! I say hats off to the policeforce - I think they have an increasingly difficult job, which they are not allowed to carry out in a proper fashion due to too much emphasis being on political correctness etc. A total breakdown in discipline is why this country is full of these gangs who terrorise for fun etc. Time was if you were naughty out in the street the local bobby would give you a clip around the ear and then go and tell your parents....you got told off twice!!! Consequently, you weren't so stupid as to do it again. Policing is one job I would not do for all the tea in China. |

One shop is close to the police station and they had the keys...safe you think...oh no that was one of the first to be looted and it wasn't broken into!!! Jacquie |

I compleatly agree with Karen, and Jacq Britain has the best police force in the world they do a good job under very difficult circumstances, and we would be a lot worse off without the people who risk their lives to keep us safe. Tina PS Jacq have just visited your lovely island for the second time, first time pre hurricane, it was so sad to see the island still so badly devestated but the moral of the people so high. i send all good wishes to you and your island .Tina |

Before I saw Harry's reply I was going to type the following anyway: one of my cousins is a retired policeman in his early 50's, and when he was in service he and his colleagues got so frustrated about the limit to what they could do to lawbreakers. Even now, police officers I know say they know what they'd like to do to the law breakers, but in fact they'd be breaking the law themselves, lol. |
