How do I deter slugs from eating my plants? I need something that is a natural way as I have a dog and dont like the thoughts of her eating the pellets! Also any ideas on keeping cats out of my garden as a few of my plants have been dug up by the little blighters! Cheers Bev |

Pair of rubber gloves, jam jar with salt in it and a torch! Only sure way I have found over years. Don't like pellets as lots of wild life in garden. Ann |

Slugs don't like walking over crushed eggshells I've heard so you could put them round your plants. I think I've seen on here a tip about sinking a small pot into the ground and putting beer in as a slug trap. |

I use liquid slug repellent instead of pellets. There are that many slugs around here, you would think they were taking over the world., lol June xx |

Hi Bev, I've tried both the beer trap and the egg shells. Both have worked. My grandson has a better idea. He picks them up and throws them over the fence into the park! Aileen |

Hi Bev I can't help with the slug problem as I have it too and just keep getting rid of any I find round the plants. I will be watching this thread for replies. The cat problem though, I may be able to help with. A few months ago there was a thread on asking for tips. I tried one, which suggested putting orange peel where the cats go and it has worked so far. Chrissie |

Funny you should mention slugs Bev, we have the same problem, we bought a liquid concentrate called Slug Clear, you mix it with water and water it over the plants and soil, we did ours last night and this morning we have loads of little baby slugs on the surface, dead baby slugs yipee (no offence to slug lovers like my grandson)lol We got it from B & Q or homebase can't remember how much somewhere between 4 and 6 pounds. Two sensible replies there, the latter of course will only work in a small garden. I use the torch method mainly. Obviously garden hygene comes into it, eliminating places for them to hide. Don,t grow things like hostas and lettuce which attract them. I encourage frogs by having corrugated sheeting down on a dampish patch. the frog live under that and reduces my slug and snail problem greatly. opening sentence referred to your first 2 replies - you,ve now got a lot more. good luck. happy days |

I have the slug traps and fill them with the water from the vegetable pot. It does work then I empty them on the garden and it does the birds no harm at all. I also have a dog, she takes no notice of them at all julia |
