I've got one with a time on it, but no sign of a twin. Either the registrar was being finnicky or maybe a stillbirth that wasn't registered?

Yes, could be a stillbirth and the baby had died, that is sad. Joy

Just checked the qtr and there is only one with their surname in the area, so if she was a twin then the other one was never mentioned, not even as male/female. Bev

Hi Bev, only with my Scottish ones, they're great. Have time of birth and address and even better grandparents names. At least, mine did. I've never heard of GRO ones having the details you have but it's fantastic you must have been over the moon. Jan :-)))

Twins always have their time on their birth certs, but some registrars routinely recorded the time, so it doesn't always mean twins. Stillbirths were not registered until 1927. If a baby was stillborn before then, it would not be recorded anywhere. If a baby was born alive and died shortly afterwards, it would have a birth and death certificate. nell

dont know if it is different in England than in Scotland - but if the pregnancy was before 28 weeks the child couldn not even be registered as stillborn :-((

Helen Little Nell, I LOVE YOU xxx My G Grandma died in 1910 due to ... can't think now ... but something to do with childbirth. This was confirmed last year when an older relly (86) confirmed that yes, a baby had been born 3 weeks before Mum died but no one knew any details about it. I have a list of 26 possible names of birth certs I was going to apply for one day .... you have just saved me an awful lot of expence. Thank you for the info regarding Stillbirths. I could hug you !! Elaine :-)

My nan's birth cert has the time on it and it was one of the first certs I got - so I was very grateful for someone on here (probably Nell!) for explaining about the twins thing. My mum thought that Nan was a twin but not sure, and I was able to find his birth and death (he lived a few hours). I got a bit clever at work the other day .... someone brought in a birth certificate for me to verify so that they could be cleared to work with children. I said 'oh, are you a twin then?'. She was amazed - yes she was an identical twin - and it was like performing a party piece to tell her that it was due to there being a time of birth on the cert! But I wasn't smug really, it was great fun to see her face!

My gg grandmother, Maria Frances LOCK, had the time on her certificate in 1838 BUT she was not a twin. Chloe
