Choosing a name?

Should a couple be allowed to give their offspring a weird Christian name? Think of the poor child when he or she grows up. At one time the choice of names was limited and one was not allowed to use weird names. Imagine somebody calling their son Fido, sounds like they are calling their dog instead of their son. Poor child when he goes to school. Sylvia xxx |

My son is called Nikki and when we went to get him christened the vicar refused because he said it was not a christian name- if we gave him a second name that would be ok so we called him Nikki John and yes we got him christened I am going back 28 years Also at school one of his teachers called me in to tell me Nik would not answer her, when I asked him why he said he did not realise she was talking to him. I went back to school and told her and it seems that she had been calling him Nicolas, she might as well have been calling him Fred his name is Nikki and it was on his school records Do you think this means that our children nowadays are not being christened if they have an unusual name? In Germany, where they are very hot on regulations, there are lists of names you are allowed to choose when registering a child. Over here you can register any name or combination of names you like - there was one poor child named after an entire football team. Not sure about christenings, perhaps like marriages they are at the vicar's discretion. I now wish I had named my children after some lovely unusual names I've uncovered in my family research [but they are glad I didn't!] Whatever name you are given, someone at school will think of a silly abbreviation or nickname for it. At our school we have quite a few children whose name they are called by is not the name they were registed with. nell |

People should be allowed to call their children whatever they want-it is a personal thing, each to their own so to speak, some children have beautiful names ,one's I would never have thought of Janet |

Yes, Janet some names are beautiful, but then again some are dreadful and even difficult to pronounce. My son's friend called their son Jazero which I find rather weird. There are so many names to choose from, why choose a weird name. Incidentally my eldest daughter is Janet. Sylvia xxx |

My brother was called Roger because my mother's maiden name was 'Rogers'. Actually he is Alfred Roger, but nobody calls him Alfred, as my father was Alfred Victor. Sylvia xxx |

All my children have names with personal 'meaning'.My daugher is named Shannon. When I told certain family members they ridiculled it, saying it wasn't a 'proper' name. She is named after the river Shannon, as my fathers family came from Limerick in Ireland. My other children are James after his dad and (Katie) Rose after my nan. Pat |

Bear in mind that 'wierd' names are only wierd because they aren't used much. If our relatives were all called Theodosia and Achitophel instead of Mary and John we would have a different opinion. nell |

My parents gave me my first and middle name for significant reasons. I like the thought that I am named after something important to them :-) |
