Smarties Smarties were launched as Chocolate Beans in 1937. Initially priced at 2d, they were renamed Smarties and packed in the famous tube one year later. The eight original colours - red, yellow, orange, green, mauve, pink, light brown and brown - remained the same until the replacement of the light brown by a blue Smarties following a successful promotion in 1989. Before 1958, the dark brown Smarties had a plain chocolate centre the light brown one tasted of coffee. Did you know - Nearly 16,000 Smarties are eaten every minute in the UK. About 570,000 tubes of Smarties are made at Nestlé’s York factory every day and exported to the Middle East, Far East and South America.

Perhaps it is a marketing ploy! There is some speculation of a repeat of the withdrawal of Salad Cream a while ago, with increased sales, lots of publicity and then the retention of the old style of product. We will see what happens! Elisabeth (Forever a sceptic, where advertising is concerned)

I agree with you Theresa, the orange ones are the best. When my kids were little I always nicked the orange ones out of their tubes, now they automatically pass any orange ones straight to me! Carolyn

Why do things have to change? I used to love to 'pop' the plastic top and see how far it would go. Jo.

If round tubes are the wrong shape, does that mean years of disruption while they alter the tunnels on the London Underground? CB >|<

Jim Alot of charities use Smarty tube filling for their funds too. When I was little, we used the red Smarties. A quick lick and we had 'lipstick'. Dark red/brown ones used if we wanted a change of colour.
