MICROSOFT are to replace the power cables on 14 MILLION Xbox computer game consoles - amid fears they could catch fire. The US firm is taking the unprecedented step, which may cost tens of millions of pounds, after faults developed in 1,400 of the power leads on machines worldwide. Seven customers reported minor burn injuries while another 23 suffered smoke or other damage to their carpet or home entertainment centre. And yesterday Microsoft bosses said that even though such a small percentage of consoles have been affected, they will change the power leads on all Xboxes made before January 13 2004 in Europe and before October 23 2003 in the rest of the world. Robbie Bach, senior vice president, Microsoft Home & Entertainment Division, said: 'This is a preventative step we’re choosing to take despite the rarity of these incidents. 'We regret the inconvenience, but believe offering consumers a free replacement cord is the responsible thing to do.' To order a new lead, customers should log onto www.xbox.com and click on the 'Power Cord Replacement for Xbox' link. It will then be sent out within four weeks of the order being placed. Xbox owners can also call 0800 028 9276 or 1800 923947 (Republic of Ireland) to order a replacement. In the meantime, Microsoft say the console can still be played with but should be turned off when not in use. Got this off the sun website, dont know if it affects anyone. Ive just looked on the xbox site and apparently mines ok,but its better to be safe than sorry Anna :-)
