3 nuns go into an electrical shop and purchase a television for £30, they each contribute £10 each. They take it back to the convent and start enjoying their new television. A tv inspector goes into the electrical shop and asks to see the list of recent purchases. He tells the vendor he overcharged the nuns and that he must visit them and give them £5 back as the tv was only worth £25! On the way to the convent the vendor sees a shop selling cheap cigarettes at £2 a pack, he has to buy a pack as they're such a bargain!!! He then arrives at the convent and explains to the nuns that he's going to give them £1 back each because he overpriced the tv. Right, the nuns paid £30 (£10 each) and were reimbursed £1 each so they spent £27 on the tv. The tv vendor spent £2 on cigarettes. £27 + £2 = £29 What happened to the extra £1??? AARRGGGHHHHHHH becx

Is the £1 in one of nuns pockets?? If the guy had £30 then he took five away. He bought cigarettes so that made £27 leaving him £3 which he gave to each of the nuns (£1). Does that make sense? :-)

He had £5 to give back £2 on fags and £3 left £1 to each of the nuns. There wasnt £1 left over.

I have spent the day, exporting figures from a major bookkeeping package into excel. No names, but it's a four letter word, beginning with S. Which would be fine, but when you add up the columns, they don't come back to the figures you expect. S*** exports all the deleted items as well. So I then have to go through manually, to weed out all the errors. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGH.

Hi Bec I don't know whether this will help. I always think of it this way. Of the £27 pounds that the nuns spent, the shop got £25 and the man got £2 for cigarettes. Chrissie x

£30-£5=£25 DIVIDE £25 by 3 = £8.33 £8.33 + £1.00 = £9.33 £9.33 x 3 = £27.99 £27.99 + £2.00 = £29.99. close to £30 eh

used to hate those kind in maths. Here's another on that can get you going. If you answer quickly you can get it wrong. One of my Dad's favourites. If a brick weighs ten pounds and half a brick - what's the weight of a brick and a half?

Joan - 30 pounds

Adding up what was spent is a false equation. The £30 is now held £25 by the TV shop, £2 by the fag shop and £3 by the nuns.
