In 2001 we were with a tour group in Scotland, they booked us into a big hotel in Oban over looking the harbour, main hotel 5 stars, our room up and up stairs around corners they had bought connecting houses, our room we just did not believe it a slum was the only way to describe dirty and it stank, so off I went back to reception told them no way were we staying in the the room they offed to put a air freshner in it, I told them were to put it, they said we have no more rooms , so says I then we will sleep here in reception, then the girl said I will have another look for a room oh there is one would you like to see it, we ended up in fab suite on the top foor over looking the harbour, so stand your ground if you can. Lou, No offense meant ! :-0 I have one too! It was just it added to the whole cheapness of the place. Kettle was unused and still in it's box. I know why now! I din't use it either! Was very thirsty by the time we got to McDonalds. Jacky :-) PS I will name and shame the Hotel and the company I booked through once I have received a reply (or not) from them. |

Did anyone see the TV programme about the Grand Hotel in Scarborough tonight? I remember it as being the 'posh' hotel in Scarborough, but not any more! Maggy |

Jacky, first time I tried to read this he site crashed. Then I thought it was a joke until I got to the end. Bob once went with a group of students to Barcelona, the college had booked through a travel agent a hotel. Well when they got there there was rather a lot of taxis drawing up outside at all times of the night. Bob and another lecturer then made enquiries at the local tourist office and found out it was the local brothel!! New hotel had to be found. Ros. |

This is another good site to look at before booking a hotel. It has unbiased reviews on hotels and locations worldwide . . . . well worth a look. www(.)tripadvisor(.)com |

When we arrived at our 'Hotel' the man at reception seemed a bit puzzled at us arriving. He looked and found our booking which had already been checked when we dropped off our luggage in the morning. we had seen another couple go in who were fairly well dressed and smiling so our initial uneasiness about the Hotel eased a little. I paid for the room and went to open the door into the Hotel. In broken English we were told, 'no. Don't come in. Not this building.' Pardon?? ' You are in annexe over the road'. We were led across a busy wide main road to a house that was not marked as an Hotel and he let us in the front door. Along a coridoor, down steps to the basement and through a door that seemed to be entry into a flat. He unlocked one door of 3 going off the 'hall' of the flat and led us into a tiny room with 2 beds. The on suite had a loo, sink and shower. All stained brown, cracked, broken tiles on the walls and floor. No towels, soap etc. Yes I know that at that point I should have turned and walked out but I had handed over my money, was in London late at night and had my daughter with me. I said that the room was disgusting and dirty and he said he would get towels! The TV didn't work so he brought another and put it on top of the first one! The room opposite was let out to a man who brought a 'lady' back for the night who at 2am tried to get in our door. There were no numbers on the rooms. Anyway, the list of complaints areas follows: Toilet - Brown and dirty Shower - Dirty with damaged walls and sides Sink - dirty Cold water - Hot Hot water - Warm Floor and skirting in bathroom - broken Beds - One had 2 stains on the quilt cover (not used that night!!) Windows - Rattled all night. CUrtains too short over a bedspread hanging at the window Heating - Cold Light fitting on ceiling - no bulb Light fititng on wall - no shade Had to move the bed to find a plug (re-charge camera battery to take photos!) No Litter bin No fire evacuation notice Basement entrance leading out to staircase blocked by furniture and a bed No markings on building to indicate use of building. Manager not available - contact through web site No apology at all Can't give refund - speak to manager (who is not available!!) Bolt on room door sharp metal edge - daughter cut finger on it Kettle - still in box - Tesco Value kettle T Bags - In basket - not individually wrapped Milk - in satchets - rock hard, no date Keys we were given were to the room only and not to the building so had we gone out we would have had to go to main building for a key to get back in. We decided not to stay for breakfast and I was up and ready at 6.45 Sunday morning. Daughter was ready by 7.45. we handed keys in. Man who took keys was cooking toast for breakfast behind reception desk. He handled keys then went back to the bread. Then noticed that behind reception was what I had thought was an office area, was in fact the dining room set up with 3 tables. So by 8 am on Sunday morning we were walking the streets of Victoria looking for somewhere warm to go. Ended up in McDonalds. Thought we would then get to Oxford Street before the rush - arrived 9.30 shops opened at 12.00!!!! So next meet, I will be staying in the Ritz! Jacky - now warmed up, showered several times, in clean clothes (slept in the others) and able to laugh about it. |
