Bev, For you and anyone else who's interested, see below. Quite long, so keep reading. CB >|< X CHINESE NEW YEAR 2005: Year of the Rooster Introduction The oldest and most important festival in China is the Spring Festival, more commonly known in the West as the Chinese New Year. Like all Chinese festivals, the date of the New Year is determined by the lunar/ solar calendar rather than the Western (Gregorian) calendar so the date of the holiday varies from late January to mid February each year. The spring festival celebrates the earth coming back to life, and the start of ploughing and sowing. Chinese Horoscopes The Chinese have named years after animals for thousands of years. In fact, the Chinese zodiac system is extremely complex, based on an ancient agricultural calendar. In addition to the twelve animals, there are the elements (Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal), hours (12 two hour periods), directions, stones, months and seasons. Add to this the influence of Ying and Yang, representing male and female forces and you will see that there is much more to the Chinese Zodiac than first meets the eye. The Twelve Animals The origins of the twelve animals, which are honoured, with a year each is rich in legends and myths. It is believed that the Chinese Lunar Calendar dates back to 2637 BC, legend has it that the Lord Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed from Earth. Only twelve of the animals came to bid him farewell, so Buddha honoured each of them with a year. The order was taken from the sequence in which they appeared to him - first the Rat, then the Ox, the Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Boar. It is believed that a person takes on the characteristics of the animal belonging to the year they were born. To find out more about your particular Chinese zodiac sign, identify your Chinese year of birth from those listed below: 24 Jan 1955 - 11 Feb 1956; Ram 12 Feb 1956 - 30 Jan 1957; Monkey 31 Jan 1957 -17 Feb 1958; Rooster 18 Feb 1958 – 7 Feb 1959; Dog 8 Feb 1959 – 27 Jan 1960; Pig 28 Jan 1960 – 14 Feb 1961; Rat 15 Feb 1961 – 4 Feb 1962; Ox 5 Feb 1962 – 24 Jan 1963; Tiger 25 Jan 1963 – 12 Feb 1964; Rabbit 13 Feb 1964 – 20 Feb 1965; Dragon 21 Feb 1965 – 20 Jan 1966; Snake 21 Jan 1966 – 8 Feb 1967; Horse 9 Feb 1967 – 29 Jan 1968; Ram 30 Jan 1968 – 16 Feb 1969; Monkey 17 Feb 1969 – 5 Feb 1970; Rooster 6 Feb 1970 – 26 Jan 1971; Dog 27 Jan 1971 – 14 Feb 1972; Pig 15 Feb 1972 – 2 Feb 1973; Rat 3 Feb 1973 – 22 Jan 1974; Ox 23 Jan 1974 – 10 Feb 1975; Tiger 11 Feb 1975 – 30 Jan 1976; Rabbit 31 Jan 1976 – 17 Feb 1977; Dragon 18 Feb 1977 – 6 Feb 1978; Snake 7 Feb 1978 – 27 Jan 1979; Horse 28 Jan 1979 – 15 Feb 1980; Ram 16 Feb 1980 – 4 Feb 1981; Monkey 5 Feb 1980 – 24 Jan 1982; Rooster 25 Jan 1982 – 12 Feb 1983; Dog 13 Feb 1983 – 2 Feb 1984; Pig Prediction for 2005 Brief astrological readings for 2005: RatA busy and varied year, but all turns out well. Initiative is the key to advancement, but don't fritter away your new-found wealth. You'll have some family problems but a full social calendar. OxA year of opportunity and achievement, rewarded with promotion, but guard your finances. A busy social life means new friendships and romance flourishes too. TigerConcentrate your energies and you'll have a beneficial year. Your career goes well and your earning power is enhanced. New friendships begin, old ones are strengthened and romance beckons. RabbitA somewhat difficult year, so be patient. Promotion is unlikely, so look to the future by studying or training and saving money. Domestic and social scenes are much more rewarding. DragonThis is a time to put your abilities to the best possible use. You will impress others and enrich yourself – but you must plan. Your social life offers new friends and partners, but listen to advice. SnakeThis is a satisfying year except, perhaps, where money is concerned. Your efforts are recognized at work, but avoid risky financial ventures. Domestic life is harmonious and this is a good time for romance. HorseThis is a time for progress if you make an effort. Not an easy year financially, but leisure interests prove satisfying. You'll enjoy a busy social life – and romance is in the air. RamIt's time for a change, make plans and act on them. Learn something new and don't neglect your creativity. Money is a stumbling block, so plan carefully. Family and friends provide support and a new friendship awaits. MonkeyThis is a year of opportunity, but competition is tough. Stay away from speculation. The family provides firm ground for your active social life and romance could flourish. RoosterYou're extroverted and intelligent, so concentrate on enterprises where your talent for hard work and efficiency excel. Rewards await you, but finances require careful management. DogA time of ups and downs … be cautious. There will be unexpected outlays, so read the small print and avoid lending. Romance may flourish if you don't rush into it. PigKnuckle down in the workplace and your efforts will be rewarded. Plan finances and save for the future. You'll find a new love or tie the knot with an old one. Character Profile The Rat People born in the Year of the Rat are noted for their charm and attraction for the opposite sex. They work hard to achieve their goals, acquire possessions, and are likely to be perfectionists. They are basically thrifty with money. Rat people are easily angered and love to gossip. Their ambitions are big, and they are usually very successful. They are most compatible with people born in the years of the Dragon, Monkey, and Ox. The Ox People born in the Year of the Ox are patient, speak little, and inspire confidence in others. They tend, however, to be eccentric, and bigoted, and they anger easily. They have fierce tempers and although they speak little, when they do they are quite eloquent. Ox people are mentally and physically alert. Generally easy-going, they can be remarkably stubborn, and they hate to fail or be opposed. They are most compatible with Snake, Rooster, and Rat people. Other people have great respect for them, but sometimes tiger people come into conflict with older people or those in authority. Sometimes Tiger people cannot make up their minds, which can result in a poor, hasty decision or a sound decision arrived at too late. They are suspicious of others, but they are courageous and powerful. Tigers are most compatible with Horses, Dragons, and Dogs The Rabbit People born in the Year of the Rabbit are articulate, talented, and ambitious. They are virtuous, reserved, and have excellent taste. Rabbit people are admired, trusted, and are often financially lucky. They are fond of gossip but are tactful and generally kind.
