Glenys the Menace! Report 11 Feb 2005 22:54

Why did the war have to start in the first place, I ask myself. So many innocent people killed on both sides.

Joy I probably saw that Church as well but its great what Plymouth has done so to the East End and Coventry. Just a pity about places like Northampton .Streets where my dad grew up (Grandads shop) were never rebuilt. Just fields now only Tanner Street remains I think???

Len of the Chilterns Report 11 Feb 2005 23:46

They sowed the wind and reaped the whirlwind. What about the thousands of aircrew lost - including some of my friends and relatives? Wars are started by politicians (who never go and fight). Who started the Iraq war on a tissue of lies, for personal aggrandisement? len

Can begin to understand some of your feelings len I had an Uncle who flew Bombers and another who armed them...both had awful memories of those dark days.

Tudor Report 12 Feb 2005 02:11

There is a church ,near the top of Bold Street in Liverpool, which is just as it was in 1941 when it was hit by German bombs. It's been left that way as a memorial to those who died in the bombing of Merseyside in 1940/1941.

Yes... What about the Blitz of London, went on for days & nights. Don't think the enemy were too concerned about the dire consequences of their bombings. My second cousin aged 21 served in the RAF, he & his crew were shot down over Germany & all perished.....Always remembered & never forgotten. Carol.

I visited a Frankfurt museum one time with a tour group of Canadians (I'm an ex-pat travel Agent) and the tour guide makes this big deal about a picture they had of the bombed out area of Frankfurt. - Looking at me she says - Isn't that terrible !!! - And I replied - I grew up in London - have you ever shown of what you did to us ! - She avoided me the rest of the tour - and I said to the group - nothing but hypocrites !

East End London .......... Kids playing in the streets walking to school , the hum of airplanes and low enough for the kids to see the piolt and wave and as they waved back and opened fire you could clearly see the smiles on their faces. That afternoon children were killed and the local school was bombed in retelation alledgedly for a german school having bombed that NIGHT by our own RAF!! A memoir of my Uncle who was aged about 8 - 10. He dodged the bullets by running sideways and he ran as fast as he could and never looked back as this had been ground into him by his father. 16 children died, 9 injured and he was one of the four unhurt. They say Hitler was an evil wotsit. What I don't understand is that INDIVIDUAL'S fought the war. To open fire on children - who could do this? WHY do this? Your in a cockpit on your own . Your concious surely would eat away at you?

Debi Coone Report 12 Feb 2005 08:26

Thats my point no one individual could make another do such a thing. It has to come from within a person to be able to do that! I would fight for my country and bomb targets ( buildings) but I would draw a line somewhere - wouldn't you?

I was born in 1940 and raised in London. My earliest memories are of Air Raid Warnings. All I want to do is forget it and hope it never happens again. As someone said earlier, the Politicians who declare war never have to go and fight themselves. Perhaps we should make them, that should stop it.

Ohhhhhh I think you'll find that Bush is leaving the Iraq mess to Blair and is now looking towards IRAN!!!! Grrrrrr that man!!

June Report 12 Feb 2005 08:48

I hope that Blair loses the election if only to break the Bush/Blair partnership. I can remember as a child my father saying that if the leaders of the country had to go to war, their wouldn't be any wars and here we are all these years later still saying the same thing. June xx
