STS was the pre-1974 county abbreviation code for Staffordshire. I doubt it would be found on an old document, but it might be used as an abbreviation on a modern transcript.

There is a place near Wolverhampton called Brewood. It is pronounced Brood or Brude. Maybe the enumerator wrote what he heard? It is in Staffordshire.

1881 Ancestry has 8 people born in 'Brude' - 6 say Staffs, one says Shropshire and one didn't know. The interesting thing is that none of them were living in the area so whoever wrote it down wouldn't know how to spell it. I would guess that Grandpa Jim is right.

We nearly bought a house there once. And yes it is very nearly in Shropshire.
