Was announced today that our local pit will close, Welbeck employs over 500 mainly local people. Our village seems to be in mourning, almost everyone has a father or grandfather that worked there, They've been trying to save it for a while, and I hear the fight still isn't over, just hope they can still save it, Will leave the UK with just 7 deep pits. Tammie, Ellington pit which is just up the road from me closed 2 weeks ago, feelings here are much the same. Its the end of an era and a lot of men will be out of work now.

I commisserate with you and the people it affects, but the real problem is money, whilst many other countries will subsidise local industries the politicians and the city would rather spend abroad and get things cheaper, Im afraid neither of them live in the real world we inhabit. And I believe the current bunch of idiots have done as much as any of their predeccesors to damage the infrastructure of this country. With Sympathy Len in Gosport

Len, apparently UK Coal were given money to help keep Ellington open but there is a problem with flooding on the face. The men reckon that it could be pumped and dried out so its workable but UK Coal said no. Last week 3 representatives went to London to speak to Blair about it, he promised to see what he could do but it doesnt look hopeful.

UK coal and the government have both given Welbeck money, wasn't enough to keep it going tho, such a shame.
