Before Christmas I received a letter from our local Health Authority asking if I would take part in a research project into cervical cancer. My first appointment is on Thursday....any other members taking part? It seems they want 200,000 to take part over the next 10 years. |

My mum also took part, but she only got as far as the first round- they pick people (at random I think) after that and divide them into groups. It is worthwhile doing though, if they can learn anything from this it would benefit all women. |

Christine If you don't mind me asking....is this because you have had it or because you haven't???? Also is this limited to the area you live in or across the Uk do you know? Yvette |

Hi Yvette No, I haven't had cancer...this is a project to see if screening will help detect cervical cancer the same way that breast cancer screening can cut deaths. You are only eligible if there is no cancer in your family & you have to be over 50 ( which unfortunately I am). Initially I have to go for an interview and a blood test and, as far as I know, we are then split into two groups - one group is screened, scans every year etc., and one is left alone and the results are then analysed. I could end up in either group but, even if it doesn't help me it could help someone. As far as I know this is a nationwide project and was interested to know if anyone else was taking part. As I said my first appointment is on Thursday and I will let you know how I get on.... |

Hi Christine Thanks for your reply, i asked as i have been unlucky enough to have cervical cancer and i am all for anything that will help detect or cure it. As i have had it, i am not eligible for the screening you are going for, but i would voluteer for anything that would help, and i am always nagging my female friends and relatives to keep their appointments for smears. Mine saved my life....literally. I would be very interested to hear what happens when you go on Thursday. Yvette |
