After a bit of searching, I found the details for where my 2*gt grandfather is buried. The little card with the details listed is well old - he died in 1916, so I don't know if it's as old as that but thought I'd list the details here for your amusement: "Visitors by tram should get off at Katherine Road or Balmoral Road, on the Romford Road, or at Manor Park Station by East Ham electric trams. Family graves, including all fees for the first interment, deed of grave space, can be obtained from £4 8s 6d. For a child under 12 years 10s less. From 10/6 to £2 2s 0d per annum the Cemetery authorities undertake to plant and maintain graves. A grave can be banked and turfed for 2/6. Best prepared mould is supplied at 2/6 to 7/6 per grave. A small tablet, or a wooden frame or kerbing may be placed on a grave on payment of a fee of 2/6 respectively. Fee payable at the office, Sebert Road entrance." |

Hi Andy, I've been to Manor Park this year to look for my sister's grave. The staff there are very helpful - if you ring they may even go and find out for you if there is a stone. When we went, the woman in the office got one of the "gardeners" to take us on a sort of golf buggy. Not sure though if there will be anyone in the office on Sunday - you really do need to ring first and check. I have got a plan of the cemetary somewhere so if you have got a grave number I can bring a copy on Saturday. Have a look at multimap or similar - you will see that the cem is just behind Manor Park station and runs alongside the railway line. Just across the road is the City of London Cem and Crem - huge - and also within walking distance is Woodgrange Park and Plashett (Jewish). West Ham Cem is a bus ride away. I go to City quite often as my dad is there, so if you don't make it I will happily go to Manor Park for you and do the photo thing. Hope some of this helps. Maz. XX |

Yes, you need Liverpool Street. There are a few railway stations in the area, but Manor Park is the one nearest the cemetery - and the station is apparently owned by the cemetery company. nell |

Sounds as if the main line is best option, assuming they run frequently. Jan, don't worry, I'll probably save any sleuthing for Sunday. :-) thanks for the tip, Brian. |

Manor Park Cemetery is BIG, so best if you can get directions to the plot in advance. London terminus is Liverpool Street, or you can take the District line from Victoria, change onto the Central line at Mile End and to the main line at Stratford, all cross-platform changes. Tubes run every couple of minutes weekdays, probably every five minutes Sundays. Main Line run every 15 minutes or so. |

No tubes! You are out in the sticks. Nearest railway station is Manor Park but I'm not sure which London terminus you go from. nell |

Whilst I'm down in London this weekend, I'm thinking of visiting some places that relate to my ancestors. One of my ancestors was born just a few streets away from Victoria station, so thinking of checking that out. However, my 2*gt grandfather is buried at Manor Park Cemetery, Sebert Road, Forest Gate, and would like to try and find his grave (have the plot details). Does anyone know the best way to get there, had a look on Multimap and there doesn't seem to be a tube station nearby? Thanks Andy. |
