My favourite as a young girl and as I was growing up was "It is a thing most wonderful almost too wonderful to be... " from the Methodist Hymn book. I always felt very moved by it. Frances |

Forty days and forty nights Thou wast fasting in the wild; Forty days and forty nights Tempted, and yet undefiled. Sunbeams scorching all the day; Chilly dew-drops nightly shed; Prowling beasts about Thy way; Stones Thy pillow; earth Thy bed. Should not we Thy sorrow share And from worldly joys abstain, Fasting with unceasing prayer, Strong with Thee to suffer pain? Then if Satan on us press, Jesus, Saviour, hear our call! Victor in the wilderness, Grant we may not faint nor fall! So shall we have peace divine: Holier gladness ours shall be; Round us, too, shall angels shine, Such as ministered to Thee. Keep, O keep us, Saviour dear, Ever constant by Thy side; That with Thee we may appear At the eternal Eastertide. |

Hail the day that sees Him rise, Alleluia! To His throne above the skies, Alleluia! Christ, awhile to mortals given, Alleluia! Reascends His native heaven, Alleluia! There the glorious triumph waits, Alleluia! Lift your heads, eternal gates, Alleluia! Christ hath conquered death and sin, Alleluia! Take the King of glory in, Alleluia! Circled round with angel powers, Alleluia! Their triumphant Lord, and ours, Alleluia! Conqueror over death and sin, Alleluia! “Take the King of glory in! Alleluia!” See! the heaven its Lord receives, Alleluia! Yet He loves the earth He leaves, Alleluia! Though returning to His throne, Alleluia! Still He calls the world His own, Alleluia! See! He lifts His hands above, Alleluia! See! He shows the prints of love, Alleluia! Hark! His gracious lips bestow, Alleluia! Blessings on His church below, Alleluia! Still for us His death He pleads, Alleluia! Prevalent He intercedes, Alleluia! Near Himself prepares our place, Alleluia! Harbinger of human race, Alleluia! Master, (will we ever say), Alleluia! Taken from our head to day, Alleluia! See Thy faithful servants, see, Alleluia! Ever gazing up to Thee, Alleluia! Lord, though parted from our sight, Alleluia! Far above yon azure height, Alleluia! Grant our hearts may thither rise, Alleluia! Seeking Thee beyond the skies, Alleluia! Ever upward let us move, Alleluia! Wafted on the wings of love, Alleluia! Looking when our Lord shall come, Alleluia! Longing, gasping after home, Alleluia! There we shall with Thee remain, Alleluia! Partners of Thine endless reign, Alleluia! There Thy face unclouded see, Alleluia! Find our heaven of heavens in Thee, Alleluia! |

The Holy City: Last night I lay a-sleeping, there came a dream so fair I stood in old Jerusalem beside the temple there I heard the children singing and ever as they sang me thought the voice of angels from heaven in answer rang me thought the voice of angels from heaven in answer rang Jerusalem, Jerusalem, lift up your gates and sing Hosannah, in the highest, hosannah to the king. And then me thought my dream was changed the streets no longer rang Hushed were the glad hosannahs the little children sang the sun grew dark with mystery, the morn was cold and chill as the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill as the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill Jerusalem, Jerusalem, lift up your gates and sing Hosannah, in the highest, hosannah to the king. And once again the scene was changed, new earth there seemed to be I saw the Holy City beside the tideless sea the light of God was on its streets The gates were opened wide, and all who would might enter, and no one was denied. No need of moon or stars by night, nor sun to shine by day it was a new Jerusalem that would not pass away. It was a new Jerusalem that would not pass away Jerusalem, Jerusalem, lift up your gates and sing Hosannah, in the highest, hosannah to the king. |

At school.... Said Judas To Mary. 1 Said Judas to Mary, "Now what will you do with your ointment so rich and so rare?" "I'll pour it all over The feet of the Lord And I'll wipe it away with my hair" she said And I'll wipe it away with my hair" 2 "Oh Mary, Oh Mary, Oh think of the poor - This ointment, it Could have been sold And think of the blankets And think of the bread You could buy with the silver and gold," He said You could buy with the silver and gold," 3. "Tomorrow, Tomorrow I'll think of the poor Tomorrow, she said, "Not today; For dearer than all Of the poor in the world Is my love who is going away," she said Is my love who is going away," 4. Said Jesus to Mary, "Your love is so deep Today you may do As you will. Tomorrow you say I am going away But my body I leave with you still," He said But my body I leave with you still," 5. "The poor of the world Are my body," He said "To the end of the world they shall be. The bread and the blankets You give to the poor You'll know you have given to me," He said You'll know you have given to me," 6. "My body will hang On the cross of the world Tomorrow," He said, "Not today, And Martha and Mary will find me again And wash all the sorrow away," he said And wash all the sorrow away," Viv |

Christ, the Lord, is risen today, Alleluia! Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia! Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia! Sing, ye heavens, and earth, reply, Alleluia! Love’s redeeming work is done, Alleluia! Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia! Lo! the Sun’s eclipse is over, Alleluia! Lo! He sets in blood no more, Alleluia! Vain the stone, the watch, the seal, Alleluia! Christ hath burst the gates of hell, Alleluia! Death in vain forbids His rise, Alleluia! Christ hath opened paradise, Alleluia! Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia! Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia! Once He died our souls to save, Alleluia! Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia! Soar we now where Christ hath led, Alleluia! Following our exalted Head, Alleluia! Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia! Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia! Hail, the Lord of earth and heaven, Alleluia! Praise to Thee by both be given, Alleluia! Thee we greet triumphant now, Alleluia! Hail, the resurrection day, Alleluia! King of glory, Soul of bliss, Alleluia! Everlasting life is this, Alleluia! Thee to know, Thy power to prove, Alleluia! Thus to sing and thus to love, Alleluia! Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia! Unto Christ, our heavenly King, Alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia! But the pains that He endured, Alleluia! Our salvation have procured, Alleluia! Now above the sky He’s King, Alleluia! Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia! Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia! |

O sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down, Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, Thine only crown; How pale Thou art with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn! How does that visage languish, which once was bright as morn! What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered, was all for sinners’ gain; Mine, mine was the transgression, but Thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Saviour! ’Tis I deserve Thy place; Look on me with Thy favour, vouchsafe to me Thy grace. Men mock and taunt and jeer Thee, Thou noble countenance, Though mighty worlds shall fear Thee and flee before Thy glance. How art thou pale with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn! How doth Thy visage languish that once was bright as morn! Now from Thy cheeks has vanished their colour once so fair; From Thy red lips is banished the splendor that was there. Grim death, with cruel rigor, hath robbed Thee of Thy life; Thus Thou hast lost Thy vigour, Thy strength in this sad strife. My burden in Thy Passion, Lord, Thou hast borne for me, For it was my transgression which brought this woe on Thee. I cast me down before Thee, wrath were my rightful lot; Have mercy, I implore Thee; Redeemer, spurn me not! What language shall I borrow to thank Thee, dearest friend, For this Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? O make me Thine forever, and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to Thee. My Shepherd, now receive me; my Guardian, own me Thine. Great blessings Thou didst give me, O source of gifts divine. Thy lips have often fed me with words of truth and love; Thy Spirit oft hath led me to heavenly joys above. Here I will stand beside Thee, from Thee I will not part; O Saviour, do not chide me! When breaks Thy loving heart, When soul and body languish in death’s cold, cruel grasp, Then, in Thy deepest anguish, Thee in mine arms I’ll clasp. The joy can never be spoken, above all joys beside, When in Thy body broken I thus with safety hide. O Lord of Life, desiring Thy glory now to see, Beside Thy cross expiring, I’d breathe my soul to Thee. My Saviour, be Thou near me when death is at my door; Then let Thy presence cheer me, forsake me nevermore! When soul and body languish, oh, leave me not alone, But take away mine anguish by virtue of Thine own! Be Thou my consolation, my shield when I must die; Remind me of Thy passion when my last hour draws nigh. Mine eyes shall then behold Thee, upon Thy cross shall dwell, My heart by faith enfolds Thee. Who dieth thus dies well. |

(Even though I say I am 36!) - sorry, Jenny, when I was little ... I don't remember. Can I say some that I like now though instead, please? For instance: Man of Sorrows! what a name For the Son of God, Who came Ruined sinners to reclaim. Hallelujah! What a Saviour! Bearing shame and scoffing rude, In my place condemned He stood; Sealed my pardon with His blood. Hallelujah! What a Saviour! Guilty, vile, and helpless we; Spotless Lamb of God was He; “Full atonement!” can it be? Hallelujah! What a Saviour! Lifted up was He to die; “It is finished!” was His cry; Now in Heav’n exalted high. Hallelujah! What a Saviour! When He comes, our glorious King, All His ransomed home to bring, Then anew His song we’ll sing: Hallelujah! What a Saviour! Joy |

My very favourite was:- The little flowers came through the ground, at Easter time, at Easter time. They raised their heads and looked around, at happy Easter time. Wish I could rememeber all the words. There was also another song. I am not sure if we sang it at Easter. It was Roses Beautiful Roses sent from Heaven Above. Perhaps Joy might be able to help me out? Jenny.xx |
