Nell, Sorry I updated my message, have emailed you to apologize. Well I don't know how rough it was way back then, but it was a poor area and completely different to Packington Street area, it changed so much during the mid - late sixties and through to the early seventies. I know Nile Street well it was just called the Nile there was little market there at one time, don't know if that's gone. My mate lived in Murray Grove which is beside there. I also lived in Pitfield Street near Old Street used to go down Hoxton all the time. I really hope it will be less than the 7 years we have to wait, keep hoping they will have a change of heart. I wanna be optimisitc. Pat x

It's only a teeeny weeny street - just past the canal, with houses on one side and a school on the other. What is irking me though is that this grandfather, Jeuel, was there in 1901 and just south is Nile Street & Shepherdess Walk. I've heard my dad talking about these places as though his father lived there, but it doesn't feature on any family certs. Now of course my dad is dead and I can't ask - plus he may have just been saying that it was a rough area when my grandad lived there. Perhaps all will be revealed on the 1911 census - only another 7 years or so to wait! nell

Hi Nell Forston Street? don't ring a bell? Have to get my A-Z out now LOL. Pat x OK Nell Found it, off Sheperdess Walk and New North Road, I remember them pulling all that area down to make way for the Packington Estate, what a shame there were hundreds of lovely houses around there. It was at the time Islington had a very bad housing crisis and the answer was to build a huge big Estate in the area. You had a nice long walk hope the weather was good. Pat x

Pat, I knew it rang bells. I recently walked down Packington Street on my way to Forston Street, which is now completely changed, but was where my grandfather was lodging in 1901. nell

Nell No its off Essex Road in Islington, went to school there well the address of the school is Prebend Street, but Packington was the house name I was in, ok makes no sense, only to me as usual. Should have put Hoxton instead of Holborn, lived there for a while, might change that thanks loll....and there are a lot more, but they had the same initials lmho. Pat x

Yes Daisy They are trying to tell you to get the Camden & Islington Family History map - a leaflet with the FRC, London Met. Archives, Society of Genealogists and other archives marked on it. I think you can download it free from the FRC site. nell

We've still got one of the original publication in 1960-something, as well as several newer ones we can never find. Also got Birmingham for some reason no-one can remember. CB >|<
