It is funny really. I had to present my daughter's birth certificate to obtain a passport for her. The FULL birth certificate mind with all the details although they are not actually evidence of her identity! Abigail

Hi, It says on all certs (even death certs) that they are not "evidence of identity". Gwynne

There's a statement on all birth certificates that points out that certificates are in no way a proof of identity, so they actually have very little use outside of genealogy - such as assuming false identities etc. As long as you know sufficient details you can order the certificate of anybody - the person who sits opposite you at work, your next door neighbour or a 'celebrity'. I seem to remember though that there has recently/will soon be, a restriction introduced on getting death certificates unless it is a family member. Simon

I was talking to a guy at the counter at the FRC about it one day and he said he regularly sees it. He has also seen some celebs in order certificates as well..

Always wondered about this, has anyone ever been brave and ordered a BMD cert for a famous UK celebrity like John Lennon or Elton John?
