I help people on the boards all the time, but whenever I ask for help, hardly anyone replies to my posts. I really just look for advice and support for my ideas, not asking for anyone to do any difficult look ups! Really annoys me. I'm so grateful to those who do give their suggestions, but it's really the case of the more the merrier. |

Chloe Perhaps your asking for information that people dont have. Not everything is available on the Internet or on CD. Some info can only be obtained by spending hours and hours slogging over a microfiche machine at a County Record Office. What is it you are looking for? I dont believe that people are purposley ignoring you. Margaret |

I'm not looking for a look up. I'm looking for suggestions, to back my theory up.... not a look up. Here is the message I posted, if you're able to help I've been looking for the baptism of my ggggg grandmother, Sarah GOLD for a few years now. On the 1851 census she gave her place of birth as Cranborne, Dorset. SKS looked her up there and she wasn't baptised there. She gives her year of birth as 1778 on her death and census records. I was looking on the Dorset OPC site for someone, and came across transcriptions for Hampreston. Sarah's son, John, lived in Hampreston for some time, he is there in 1841 and 1851 at least. So I looked on the Bishop's Transcripts for baptisms on the off chance that I might find something, and there was this: Sarah daughter of James & Sarah GOULD baptised 24-May 1779. What do you think? Is it likely to be my lady? The family moved about in the area (about 20 mile radius, in Dorset and Hampshire). Sarah's grandson was born in Cranborne in 1832, but lived in Hampreston and Wimborne for a time. Benjamin and Sarah lived in Shirley in 1851. Both died there in the 1850s. Benjamin (Sarah's husband) was baptised in Harbridge in 1778, John was baptised in Ringwood in 1807. They didn't move very far around. John (son) did go as far south as West Parley in 1825 and 1826. Any advice, suggestions???? |

Yes, sorry. They married in 1803 in Ringwood, Hampshire. (on the border with Dorset) BUT no clues on there, barely readable witnesses, James Lockyer and ?? ?? |

Hi again, When she married was she "of this parish"? If so look there first for a baptism. If you don't find one then see if there are settlement papers for her. Gwynne |

chloe if you can find her marriage in parish records you might also find her Father _ not sure if in 18th century the father's name is always there. but the marriage would give more clues. You really need to find her father to match it with the baptism record. Ann Glos |

Chloe, its quite possible this person is the one and the same. Remember names through the years were often spelt wrong - "e" being added to the end of names, and in the instant of GOLD did someone presume a "U" ? Tis a mystery. John |

Yep she is of the 'same parish' as Benjamin which was Ringwood. BUT Ben was born in Harbridge (1851 and confirmation through baptism record) and she gives her place of birth as Cranborne. |

Thanks John. That is exactly what I was thinking, that the name was just spelt differently on one of the records. Ann - no father on the marriage record. |

Hi, Her family may have a legal settlement in the place where she married. Not all settlement papers have survived, unfortunately. The name of her father is unlikely to be on her marriage record in 1803. There may be a clue in the names of any sons she had. Gwynne |

Make that a correction...... not Ringwood, they married in Christchurch, but their children were born in Ringwood. |

My Gold family became Gould around the 1800's and recent contacts with distant cousins shows they are all now Gould. |

Chloe, Hi, I did look at this on Tips, but have found it easier to read on here now you can put para's in :O) Certainly sounds like it could be your lady - especially with that name it can be easily misheard. I have Goult's in my tree that have been Gould's Gault's & Golt - even Goulty!!! Sorry not to have helped earlier :O) |

Thank tou Dee, Annie and Anne. It's good to hear that I might be on the right track. Anne - as for the para thing - it's annoying that you can't do that on the first message. Thanks again to everyone. I'm rather happy, now to find her parents' marriage.... that'll be another couple of years!! Chloe |

Hi again Chloe During my free moments I went to this site - http://www.uk-genealogy.org.uk/visitations/index.html - the Visitations - UK Genealogy Heraldry and History - Free resources. Then select 'The Visitation of Dorsetshire, 1623, edited by John Paul Ryland, F.S.A.' - once there go to page 55 and you will find 'GOULD' for 1623! |
