Going through the parish records for St Mary, Harrow on the Hill, during the 17th and 18th century there are regular references to the "Cutbeard" and "Bugbeard" families. Same in other North middx churches. Shortly into the 19th century both these names seem to die out. Now I don't think I'd like to be called Bugbeard, but has anyone else noticed the dropping of certain surnames? I can't believe they just died out!

I think that sort of thing is most likely Joy, perhaps more acceptable to the owner!
