I remember that when I was at primary school a similar thing happened, only it wasn't a bullet that was found but detonators for dynamite. The playground was evacuated and school closed for the rest of the day. This was at least 33 years ago. |

Lisa,Lucia,,Emma, handguns were banned, in this country, all because of a slip up by the local police. and the tragedy at Dunblane. I dont know the school layout, but is it possible that the land is/has been used for shooting vermin?........ It all depends on which type of bullet it is. also there are many imitation/decoratively styled bullets used as jewelry, it could easily have been one of those. Was it the lead(which is the bullet) or was it a complete cartridge?...........I wonder.......... Bob Incidentally when we see these middle eastern guys shooting into the air..........I wonder how many people get hit, when the bullets return to earth?........what goes UP...Must come Down...... |

Yes Lucia, it was a week before my daughter was born and I was at home on maternity leave. I watched it all unfold during the day on TV. I can never forget it - particularly the anguish of the parents while they waited for news. At our primary school the gates are kept locked all day and the classroom doors are locked too. There is CCTV and a buzzer system at the front office. These measures were put in place at most schools as a direct result of Dunblane. Emma - if you are worried about security at the school then maybe you should raise it with the Head or the Governors or the LEA. There should be restricted access to the school site surely in this day and age. Maz. XX |

This made me think about what happened at Dunblane. Does anyone remember hearing about that? At Dunblane, pupils and teachers were shot. Lucia :-) |

I hope it was the latter. My little girls are really freaked out, as kids are with this sort of thing. There are 5 schools on the campus and the whole site is open to anyone. There is a field between my daughters school and the seniors school and the police were there a few weeks ago searching the field and bushes. |

I am sorry you have had this scare, but schools (and anywhere else) can never be 100% safe from all risks. If someone wants to fire a gun and has a gun to fire, he could do it anywhere, not just at a school. We can't go round in bullet-proof clothing all day. The bullet may have come from a gun fired at the school - equally a pupil could have picked it up elsewhere, brought it to show his mates and dropped it. And I've had at least 6 letters about men hanging around schools. years ago you wouldn't have had the warning. Provided your children are aware of "stranger danger" and know what to do if they are lost/worried about something, its best not to get too het up. We should be giving the message that children can cope with the world, not that it is too scary to do anything. nell |

A bullet was found today by a child in my daughters playground. The police had to do a search and the kids had to stay in, how worrying is that? Only a few weeks ago we had letters home about a strange man hanging around the school, i dont think schools are safe enough. |
