I had it, and its horrid. Was really ill for about a week..... and I ached all over ( not to mention the swollen glands in places I didn't know you could have glands !!!) Had 3 lots of blood tests, and was wiped out for weeks afterwards. I found this worse than having the flu. You have my sympathy. Andrea |

Hi janet I had Glandular fever about 15 years ago after a period of overdoing it at work. Was absolutely exhausted, couldn't eat, blinding headaches, was delierious one night at the height of it... lost about a stone in weight in a fortnight. Went back to work after 3 weeks... was pretty drained for about 6 months though, shouldnt have rushed back... Hope you get a diagnosis one way or the other... Paul |

I have had it Janet and i was really bad for three months, no energy, no appetite, almost lost my spleen over it. Didn't have a sore throat though but had pains in my glands 24/7. If and when it is confirmed if you have it, you can get help for the tiredness and any loss of appetite, but it depends it can be mild , really have to wait and see, shouldn't take long to be confirmed. My 15 year old daughter had it in October / November with little bad spells on and off since. The recent flu like virus knocked her for six for a few days. The main complaint from her is the frequent sore throats, headaches and lethargy. She will still sleep nearly all day Saturday - gets up, comes down and falls asleep on the sofa (that could be a teenage thing!) Doctor said will probably go on for about 6 months. So that has been all through her mock GCSE's and then her exams in May. Should be over it in time for the summer! That will help with her exam results!! I had it at 21 and too long ago to remember properly. Hope you get well soon. Jacky xx |

Hubby had it at 19 before we were married. God it was the most scary thing nursing him through it. He was so weak he couldn't even get out of bed to go to the loo alone. Stupid doctor sent us home with some green throat spay saying he had tonsilitis :( ... boy did I give him what for when we found out! Any time hubby gets a cold now he always goes down with it worse because of the G.F. Hope you're feeling better soon. XX Sioux |

I think the term glandular fever covers several illnesses with similar symptoms. I had something called that when I was 27. I was jaundiced and had pains in the neck/shouders. The doctor was about to suggest a blood test but when heard my urine was the colour of sergeant major's tea he said, "Classic symptoms, no need for a blood test". I was off work for three weeks but, by the middle of the third week, felt a fraud for not being at work. I returned to work and had no lasting effects at all. |

Having had five children in 4 years I went down with glandular fever. It is the most debilitating thing I have ever had.I was totally exhausted.I would lie in bed desperate for a drink which was in the glass beside me and not have the strength to raise myself up to drink it.I got better very very slowly and often had return bouts of it through thr years.--You poor love,no wonder you are feeling so rough. You just have to rest and it can be a slow recovery. All the Best,Look after yourself and eat and drink plenty of nourishing foods Hugs Rose |

My husband had it at 30 years old, he's now 41. He's not been right since. He catches every bug going and has also collected several allergies, has long periods with sore swollen glands and extreme tiredness and the doctors do sweet Fanny Adam except treat the symptoms. People's attitudes vary between showing great sympathy to suggesting that he's a maingerer even to the point that the doctor thinks that glandular fever clears up quickly! He used to be a super fit long distance cyclist, no more. The sad thing is that he feels like his body has been replaced by an older worn out version. Talk about shuffling deckchairs on the Titanic. I hope you get better and have no long term effects. Good luck. Louise |

Yes Kissing disease the common term??? Mononucleusosis the medical term Geoff disgree there are mild forms and extreme forms I had the extreme form and ended up with hepatitis, very unpleasant if you contract the worst form. three months very sick in Barnet hospital and as an outpatient. I weigh 7stone 12lbs and went down to 6stone 5lbs with a huge liver, spleen nearly came out the side of my body/ I couldnt drink for over two years, then could only drink small amounts of stout. I think i would consider it a similar thing to TB which I also had, I had that disease mild a shadow on my lung my mother had the extreme a cavity in the lung. I did not put this in the original thread did not want to alarm someone that did not know if they had it or not. Thing with this condition its rare to get the extreme form I was very unlucky. There is a lot more help out there, especially if you cannot eat like I couldnt. Think its a shame to worry about the extremes as they are so rare. The mild form is like a very bad flu leaves its mark, but much less stressful than the rare type. Pat x |
