Hi Hellen Amitriptyline is an anti depressant, used to help with pain, sleep and depression, i take several drugs including morphine, to control pain, i took a 2 week break from my pills without reducing any of them and didn't have any side affects, i needed to do this to give my stomach etc a break. Pain wise it was a tough 2 weeks for me. But i did this with the drs knowledge and would reccommend you speak to yours first before cutting back on medication. as every one reacts differently. sandra

Christine, i agree it goes make you depressed, it works for some people with no problems, but since stopping one tab,feel a lot different {normal?] Liz,thanks a lot i have not got those problems {yet?} thanks helenx

And this is from www.mentalhealth. com: "Abrupt cessation of treatment after prolonged administration may produce nausea, headache, and malaise. Gradual dosage reduction has been reported to produce, within 2 weeks, transient symptoms including irritability, restlessness, and dream and sleep disturbance. These symptoms are not indicative of addiction. Rare instances have been reported of mania or hypomania occurring within 2 to 7 days following cessation of chronic therapy with tricyclic antidepressants. " Liz x

Hi Helen funny you should mention this. I was just reading Take A Break this morning and a woman has written on the medical page about wanting to come off amitriptyline (which she was on for increased sensitivity of the nerve supply) She said the drug was making her depressed. Docs advice was that there were other options for the pain such as gabapentin, or carbamazepine. Don't know if that's helpful to you or not. best wishes Christine

If I were you I would see your doctor and seek his advice about decreasing the dose gradually. Amitriptyline can cause problems if you stop taking it too quickly. Liz

Hello, sorry if this has been said before, does anyone else on here take Amitriptyline?? 18 months ago the dr put me on it for nerve pain at the time i did not care what it was, now i want to come it,{the last 10dys i have only taken 1 tab and not 2} and up to now i have not had any extra pain!!!! What does any one else think???helenx
