with my first i craved jaffa cakes (4 boxes a day) bananas & for dinner i used to have a bowl of pasta with brussel sprouts & onion gravy. once she was born i then craved indian curries which i had never eaten before i then realised i was pregnant again when i went off the curries and fancied plain boiled potatoes with loads of salad cream, i also munched my way through the local shops supplies of fruit pastelles ( the only thing that kept the morning sickness at bay).

1st - green apples, lettuce and salad cream sandwiches, but went off butter and milk. 2nd - celery (which I had always hated until then) 3rd - burnt toast (the blacker the better!) Weird thing is, I still love all of the above especially the burnt toast! Frances

The brain is a marvellous organ. Not only does it register when the body in deficient in nutrients (in pregnancy there is often a deficiency in minerals normally required only in minute quantities eg boron, selenium etc etc) but it sets up a craving for those chemicals. Even better, it usually knows where such nutrients are likely to be found and directs the attention there. len

Many years ago my pregnant neighbour gave me her coal shed key to keep (luckily it was summer) as her husband had found her in the coalshed several times eating the small shiny pieces of coal. My craving was normal - chips but only at 2.00 a.m. and my son I had a thirst I could not quench - went off tea and coffee but was staying with my aunt and g.ma middle of Feb in Hull watching the snow blizzard, drinking orange squash made with iced water and sucking ice cubes with g.ma crying 'this baby will be born with pnemonia'!

Could we do a survey of sex linked cravings? I have a theory that little girls make you crave acidic foods... What do you think? Abigail

Abigail Report 31 Jan 2005 22:42

Strawberries with both of them, buckets and buckets! Hated toast and tea and coffee. A friend of mine would sniff windowleen! And with my daughter pear drops, pickled gherkins and vinegar - I could drink it! Abigail

I didn't even have the pregnancy excuse! When I was little I used to LOVE marmite and lemon curd sandwiches! Can't imagine how that got started! My Mam had endless cups of hot choc when she was expecting me--consequently I was the fattest baby in the family--10lb 2oz!
