As you say - superstitions and most of it non-sensical. When the conscious mind closes down, as in sleep, the subconscious does a back up of all the experiences it has recorded since last sleeping. Its objective is survival and every new experience alters one's life strategy. It also solves a lot of problems and relays answers to the conscious mind on waking. Hence the old adage 'sleep on it'. The subconcious levels of brain are mainly in the right hemisphere of the brain whereas the speech centre are in the left so, during sleep, there is not much going on between the two hemisperes therefore the subconscious does not use words but accesses the visual cortex at the back of the head thus producing dreams. It tends to use symbolic meanings as it has no words and this differs from culture to culture and even person to person. It is possible to figure out the meaning of one's own dreams when one knows what is going on although help from a psychologist is sometimes necessary. Len |

Julie Your dream would be described as a 'Recurring dream' which means your subconcious is grappling with a problem or dilemma which remains unresolved. It could go back to your teens or childhood and may even hark back to a lack of communication between you and you mother which bothered you but you ignored at the time. There are qualified people who specialise in dream analysis if this still bothers you. Len |

Jacqueline Were you ever late for school or were you just terrified by the thought? len |

Hi Len! Certainly, mornings were frantic when I was young - I was lucky to get there in time. I was afraid of being late, but I was so badly organised and poorly disciplined, there was nothing I could do to help myself. In the dreams, there are transport issues which couldn't have existed in reality, e.g I have to decide which car I'm going to drive to school! And I sometimes have a variation on this type of dream; I'm back at the office I left 15 years ago, and I've forgotten to fill-in my flexi-time card. It hasn't been done for weeks, months even, and I'm going to be in trouble...! |

Jacqueline So it all revolves round the terror of getting to school. The matter of 'what car' is just symbolic - it is a ploy of the subconscious, updating the original underlying worry (if you see what I mean). The subconscious has us doing all sorts of unlikely things such as flying, fluently speaking unfamiliar languages or even expertly playing musical instruments of which, normally, we have no knowledge just to let us know we have not yet come to terms with the problem. Same thing applies to your flexi-time worries. These things can be talked through and resolved so that the dreams do not re-occur. Just understanding what is happening is usually sufficient to stop the dreams. Not sure if it can be done through this medium, though, but e-mail me direct if you would like to discuss it further. len |
