Two people gave me access to their trees and yes there seemed to be a link with my grandfather - however I have not given them access to my tree, as they had a brother of mine recorded in their trees with a wife, but sadly my brother only lived for 3 days. This made me doubt as to whether any of the names in their tree had actually been verified or not and they are not related, they just have some of the same names as I.

not everyone is unresponsive, i had a mistake in my tree, too annies form the same town married 2 men with the same surname within 2 years of each other. I had found my marriage right at the beginning of my research and assumed it was right (not a mistake i would make no i hope) a contact pointed out we had different maiden names and asked me where i had got mine from (didn't say i had it wrong, even though she must have know i did) i told her what i had and then she told me what she had, and it was obvious that she had better info in the form of a birth cert giving mothers maiden name. I did feel a little foolish but was so grateful as i was stuck on this line and the new info got me going again.

So dont be put off contacting others with info you know is wrong, but just be tacktfull about how you tell them lol

as for peeps nicking your tree, i have had this, makes me not want to share my tree with anyone, the most annoying thing is that on my hotmatches i had a match to a guy with my Nan on someones tree on his tree, i haven't shared it with him, he wont tell me where he got it and wont remove her name. i am very careful to not have the names of any living, or recently living people on my tree, my Nan is on my tree as living relative.

the person that copied my tree is doing his wifes family and the link with mine is via a marriage in the 1600s. the person from that marriage had a sister who married into my family so realy cant call himself a rellie .
i have blocked him but i think he printed my tree and has probably done it to several people. he keeps messaging me 'can i see your tree' i dont even bother to reply.

It is so annoying isn't it. I had the same and the person even put my details incorrectly and would not have it when I said they were wrong. He did the same with other family members too. He isn't even really related as he is doing his wife's side and we have a link going back many many years. I then found he had put the tree on the internet and included living people.

I have stopped his access to my tree and blocked contact with him but he will not remove the details from the internet.

What satisfaction can there be in having wrong info and knowing it is wrong?

to make it look like he had not copied my tree he altered some of the dates including my fathers year of death (he only died a year ago ) the man put him as died 3 years ago he also put my grandfathers father as being 1 year old when he had him ???????? it is like this man is playing some kind of game with people.
i am now very carefull who i share my tree with.

I don't think there is a lot you can do, as long as you know you have the certs and your info is correct then that is all that matters. If people are serious about what they are doing then I think they will verify any info they get and buy certs for themselves.

I do agree with contacting GR when people have included living rellies without permission however, this is an invasion of privacy

Angie,Its worth making a list and sending it to GR.I did it and the joy i got from seeing my hubby and parents out of his tree was bliss.Plus he got a warning.This man copied everything from one of my relatives tree. Annie

yes i agree i have spent 4 years working on my tree my fathers family has taken a lot of hard work so far i have got back to my gggrandfather, i came across many brick walls that made me sweat,and it has made me angry that this man just copied my tree and claimed it as his own work.
i have also found some of my ancestors graves and wrote about them , he has even copied that and worded it as if he had found them .

Whenever I politely point out to anyone that they may have errors in their tree, guarantied I will never hear from them again! Ignorance is bliss!!

i have had this . my tree was copied very quickly i was allowed to view his he is a very very very distant relative. He has refused to remove my living rellies from his tree and has copied all details and claimed the research as his own.
i found that out because he contacted a cousin of mine she was concerned and rang me.he has made me angry because he did not ask permission to add my living rellies,i contacted gr and they want me to email them a list of my rellies that i want removed from his tree, that will take ages.

HE EVEN HAS SOMEONE WHOS NAME IS WRONG
SO 2 PEOPLE SAME BIRTH YEAR,
I HAVE ASKED FOR HIM TO CORRECT,BUT HE REUSED.
WHENWE CONTACTED HE PUT THE WHOLE OF MYNAMES ON HIS TREE,
SO WHAT WOULD YOU DO.,,,
