I have IBS, but don't take anything for it. Mine started through stress, and has has 'calmed down' over the years, but I still have symptoms and the cause of the symptoms can change.
Initially it was bread that caused me most problems, so I just didn't eat it. Now I can, but have found that restaurant and take away curry's are the most recent intolerance I have - I actually bring them back up!!

I also find eating lamb, boiled potatoes and cabbage for a few meals are a good way of 'cleansing' the system, and slowly adding other ingredients to see what is causing the symptoms.

I'm fortunate as I don't usually have pain, just bloating and the 'morning rush', which I can cope with - I just get up before anyone else!! LOL

If the yakult type drinks don't help (they sent my OH into worse spasms) try activia yogurt. We stumbled over it by accident and it works wonders for him.

I think I read somewhere that artificial sweetners (some or all?) are really bad for IBS sufferers. The one that's in chewing gum in particular.

I was diagnosed with it a couple of years. Def stress related, as I don't always have it. It's livable with but obviously not very glam!
The best thing is to see your GP and get all the info you can, tho I must say there's plenty on this thread. A couple of things I didn't know.
As also already said you probably won't get all the symptoms and your symptoms may vary.
You'd be surprised how many people are fellow sufferers.
Best wishes

thanks everyone.......i had a bout of diarrhoea about 3 weeks ago and thought nothing of it now its returned and i've been like it all week....its worse in the morning....i have some of the other symptoms too but that is the worse one.

i have been on a few flights lately and am flying for 7 hours in a few weeks...i hate flying so i'm wondering if the worry and fear of the flights is causing it.

I'll call my GP on monday...thanks for all the tips on easing it..i'm very grateful,

Karen

I feel sorry for you, my boyfriends had it for years and gets very bad turns every now and then and ends up in hospital for days until they clear him out then he gets sent home. He is on fibregel, lactolose and takes buscapane tablets to help with the pain. Debbie

I suffered with it for 8 years - cured it by taking regular doses of Aloe Vera Juice for a few weeks - you can get it in health shops like Holland & Barratt

I have IBS and depending on your symptoms your doctor may prescribe different things.Peppermint works for some people but it makes me worse. You can get antispasmodics to help with the pain.I have alternate bouts of constipation/diarrhoea,so I take a sachet of fibre gel after main meal. This is a mild fibre so doesnt irritate the way bran can and is helpful with easing hard stools or solidifying loose ones.
Hot water bottle sometimes eases tummy pain. It's often stress related so try and find ways to relax.
hope the doc sorts you out
