Richard Glastonbury, born c.1625. He is on King Henry VIII military survey and owned a poleaxe, (the kind with a hook on to pull people off their horses) a clacky visor helmet and other weapons. Before that there are other Glastonburys back to 1230, but I can“t connect them up directly to Richard unfortunately.

Hi DC

A lot of my ancestors (Sparhams) lived around Suffolk and Norfolk. There was a witch, Margery Sparham, hanged by the Witchfinder General on 27th August 1645. I reckon there is a link but can I find it - no.

Thanks entirely to a lady I have never met (don't even know her name or where she lives) I have a trace back to a Bryan Slater who was born near Cartmel, Lancashire (now in Cumbria) about 1537.

Creeping onto thread because this will probably kill it....if so sorry!

My earliest ancestor has been well researched by professional genealogists and was a man called Afranius Syragrius who was a Gallo-Roman consul mentioned in documents in 381 AD.

He is thought to be the earliest certain and documented ancestor of Charlemagne. Charlemagne is a documented ancestor of many well known historical people such as Matilda of Flanders (wife of William the Conqueror). My 9x great grandfather was an Earl and he was descended in numerous ways to the Conqueror and Matilda.

Afranius is my 48x great grandfather.

But this is all just a parlour game. It is believed that Charlemagne is the ancestor of all those of European ancestry so Afranius would be one of your ancestors too. It's proving it that is the tricky bit!

Oh dear....sorry Lynda. Looks like I killed it.

On every other branch of my family tree I am lucky to get back to the 18th century. I used to be very happy with an ancestor who was my 10x great grandfather born around 1500.
I've got a number of irritating ancestors mentioned on the 1841 census as "Born out of County" who died before 1851 and I've no idea where to look for them.

So my distant ancestry is very much the exception and only on one line.
