A lot of use by dates are just designed to make you buy more of the product. Even SALT has a use by date! Salt should be good to use until approx the heat death of the universe! (after about 14 billion years proton decay may be a bit of a problem!)

Best before dates are just that and the contents are fine well past the date. Use by dates are a bit different and should be taken a little more seriously, even so use by dates have a lenghty 'safety margin' built in so for examples yoghurts a couple of weeks past the use by date are still fine. The one product that amuses me is the bottle of mineral water that states 'slowly filtered through rock over 1000 years - store in a cool dark place and use by!'

The explorers of old travelled with salt beef which had maggots when they came to eat it (extra protein?) most of them lived to tell the tale.
Now a lot of preservatives are in purchased foods and dates are a guide so the makers don't get sued.

Thats not too bad. Recently went through the kitchen cupboards at Malcs and found curry powder that was use before March 1996. No wonder he said he felt ill after eating curry!!! We ended up throwing out a carrier bag full of jars and tins that were at least 6 years out of date. Bless him!!!

Off subject slightly but still mince pies..... I read a bit in the paper yesterday about silly laws that still exist ....did you know in Scotland I think it was (im bound to be corrected) Its illegal to eat a Mince Pie on Christmas day ...... this was in the small print after its still illegal to die in the house of commons ...which was natuarly bold print!
