Winter Drawers Ever Near Report 8 Nov 2007 22:14

Severe tidal surge warning for Norfolk. Just caught the tail end of the news on the radio as I was driving home.

Think they said 8,000 peeps or might have been homes evacuated. All eastern coastal areas are on alert and the Thames Barrier has been closed in case of a tidal flood in the London area.

I'm ok here in Norwich, because I'm on a hill here (yes a hill in East Anglia lol) but not so far down the road, only 15 miles is Great Yarmouth, where the worst of the surge is expected to hit at the same time as peak high tide, causing water levels to rise up to 3 meters more than normal high tide.

Many people have been told to move out of their homes for the night, elderly care homes have been evacuated and schools are already closed in preparation. Gt Yarmouth has already suffered autumn floods for the last 2 years. People are working round the clock to protect their homes.

These are very similar conditions that caused the heavy flooding in this part in 1957, but hopefull the improved defences will keep the worst of it at bay this time, but the truth is nobody knows what will happen.

Thanks for the link Maggie. I've checked and double checked and thank goodness, although my area was flooded in the 50s it looks like we may escape it this time. Fingers and toes crossed xx

Muffster, its mainly Gt Yarmouth and Lowestoft. North Norfolk is expected to feel the surge but not at high tide.

Horrible thing to happen. Whilst I thank god it's not me I feel for those that have this hanging over them.

Lets hope it's not as bad as first thought x

Morning,

Hope all those in affected areas are ok.

Thanks for that Maggie. Hope things are ok for you too Teresa.

Couldn't reply last night to the thread as I had to go out again to one of my clients and by the time I came back, fell into bed.

Keep safe.
