I am not a dentist ...Janine but with your tender gum and all..

belive it or not I have a very small bottom jaw...(big gob ) and my widsom teeth grew sideways pushing in to the molers sending them bad...had them all removed ....dont worry they will sort you and atthe hospital they seem to be students so very attentive..lol

Ouch..... having had 4 of my 5 wisdom teeth removed (yes I know I am odd) I understand your pain!

I hope they sort it for you soon...... and the only remedy if they remove it for the pain that you will have afterwards is ALCOHOL!! Trust me nothing else touches it!

Hi Janine
Have you got any Corsodyl? If not, go and get some. Corsodyl mouthwash or gel is the best. It is an antibacterial which is perfect for erupting wisdom teeth. It also has a slight numbing effect. If you get the gel you can rub it gently into the swollen gum. Don't use it for more than a week at a time, as it can stain the teeth.

Failing that, rinse with a cup of warm salt water. 1 teaspoon in a cup of warm water. Do that about 4 times a day.

The reason for the tender gum is that small particles of food get under the flap of gum and cause inflammation.

Try holding whiskey in your mouth and occasionally swallowing it - seriously it does help kill the pain although you may end up with a headache!
